The Republic would have been forced to come up with a more sophisticated political system than a unicameral legislature with no separation of powers between the executive and legislature.

For as old and sophisticated as the Republic was, it was politically retarded. They had the luxury of relying upon the Jedi to hold it together, so there was no need to evolve politically. Notice what happens when they try to create the same thing after the fall of the Empire with only a handful of Jedi.
