A ground based combat vehicle that weighs tens of thousands of tons is always a bad concept. It's utterly moronic.consequences wrote:Its actually not a horrible concept, just badly executed.

It doesn't weight tens of thousands of tons.consequences wrote:So what about the AT-AT then?

So you're asserting an AT-AT weighs at least 10,000 tons? Even though a Bolo is as tall as an AT-AT, much more massive in construction, isn't mostly hollow like an AT-AT carries a lot more weaponry that is far more massive, and shrugs off kt and mt level weaponry?.consequences wrote:Look at the size of that thing, and figure the density of Star Wars armor, and try to say that with a straight face.

How does that relate to the weight of an AT-AT? The two weapons are not even remotely comparable in either role or capability. One is the biggest uber wankfest in sci fi, the other is a well protected but nonetheless inefficient terror weapon.consequences wrote:Given that the armament of a Bolo is supposed to be a serious anti starship threat, and the low materials technology that indicates, yes, I do.

Well... a MK.33 did once duel an obiting starship. It was stated that the ship would have totalled the BOLO with one direct hit, but the BOLO was able to dodge and so on well enough that the ship never hit it.
As for a building collapsing on it, a MK.33 was once buried under hundreds of meters of rock, for several years, with most of its power cores fucked. It eventually was "woken up" after a few years, and managed to drive itself up to the surface and break out.
Actually a BOLO could probably avoid orbital strikes pretty well on Coruscant, by coring through the huge buildings and sneaking around down in the bowels of the planetwide city.
That's an advantage that Coruscant would give it - even a BOLO could hide down there.
Drive out into the open, lob hellbore fire into the surrounding area for several hundred miles, tunnel back into the bowels of the place and get away.
The MK.33 can also fly.
The bottom line is that if the Republic/Empire or whatever wants to take it out, they must be prepared to use a quantity of destructive force that will cause a massive amount of collateral damage.
The Empire I can see doing that, they're ruthless as fuck, but the Republic?
Especially if it was hanging around a target they wouldn't want to waste, such as the Senate or the Jedi Temple, and using it as a shield to stop them firing.

Contain Bolo, fire 200000 190 Mt missiles inside, kill the thing through reverberating hydrostatic shock.

They have redundant planetary shields for the planet. There is no specific mention of the capability being available for rapid use on Coruscant, but it just makes sense damnit. It's the sort of thing I'd want available at a moments notice in case the Rebellion tried to detonate a series of nukes on the surface or worse. If I was one of the people working at a shield generator aand I saw a 30000 ton tank laying waste to the area I'd sure as hell try it anyway.
Totenkopf wrote:And the provision for these shields to be suddenly thrown up in the middle of the city is... where?
A canopy shield defended the Rebel base on Hoth. To suggest that the Imperial capital cannot erect a canopy shield over a portion of itself is asinine. It could be done in hours, noone said suddenly.
Although what's equally asinine is the thought that this ridiculous vehicle could move anywhere around Coruscant at all anyway.

Ah, good point. Shouldn't take long.consequences wrote:All it would require would be a change in the shield shape projected by a ortion of the inner shield bubble, if they can continuosly create holes for all of the incoming spaceship traffic then selective manipulation of the fields is possible, and not too difficult given the volume of traffic.
I'd still like to hear how this Bolo thing gets around though.

Tunneling through the cityscape with its hellbores in a manner reminiscent of the Bolo in the short story with the "Harpies" tunneling through the mountain. Given the time required in that instance, and the structural density required to support the megascrapers on Coruscant, it won't be going very far.

Off topic but seen as this thread was 'borrowed' from sb.com, and as the following thread was posted in a similar vein:

Why do people have trouble with the scale of Coruscant? the enormity of the place shoud be clear by now, especailly after EpII.
On-topic has anyone considered if a Bolo is capable of bringing a building down? Consider that for modern concrete structures 20 Psi overpressure does not ensure destruction (Nuke FAQ: "Heavily built concrete buildings are severely damaged or demolished"). To construct a Km high building today would probably require all steel construction, and given the much higher shear strength of steel over conrete (~10 times) it would probably take >100 Psi to bring it down.
Now consider the advanced construction techniques and materials required to construct buildings as tall as those of Coruscant and you get the idea.

The Bolo should be able to bring one down by progressively cutting across the base with its fire. However it would take a while for anything significant. Its unlikely it would get more the one or two before being destroyed.Evil S'tan wrote:Off topic but seen as this thread was 'borrowed' from sb.com, and as the following thread was posted in a similar vein:
