Jesus Christ, don't any of you watch TV? Darth Maul, according to a certain toy commercial, circa 1999/2000, could weild Force Lightning, and when he did, toys shot out of his Force Lightning and hovered in front of the camera.
I can't believe everybody missed that one. I'll try to find a clip in the TFN archives or something.

Still brings up the "where is it on the canon ladder" problem.

I think Maul can't use the Force Lightning.

I read somewhere that there are different types amongst forcewielders.

Some prefer to learn healing while others prefer combat technics.

I think Maul fits in the "combat" category and although he was very skilled with his double bladed lightsaber, he wasn't as deeply trained as Dooku or Vader.

...and here's another theory of mine.

I was really surprised that Dooku was able to use force lightning in AoTC.

I think in ep III he will turn against Darth Sidious when he realizes that he's been tricked by Palpatine.
They will duel and Dooku will fall.
Then Sidious will take Anakin as his new pupil and because he learned from his mistake he won't teach Anakin the full knowledge of the Sith.
That's why Vader never used force lightning...

...and please don't say "but he was the greatest would-be jedi" and his midichlorian level was greater than Yoda's...
Palpatine's midichlorian level was never measured...

You would be correct. Palpy is a politician, which is why he ends up being dictator, for Palpy knows, as other sith befor him have not, that power comes from the manipulation of the power of the state as much as the darkside.
Remember that in the Dark Empire books, the Re-Cloned Emperor uses a lightsaber and absolutely owns Luke. But then again, that's DE for you.

He may wellhave done, but the ability to use a lightsabre is insignificant next to the power of running a galaxy.

Why does everyone keep saying that Maul is just into "combat" (ie: physical fighting)?

After all, during the battle, he made extensive use of the force both to enhance his attacks and attack the Jedi directly.

Note he used Force throw to set off the force fields, he pushed Obi-Wan around, etc. I think that qualifies as a "force user" don't you? He used it at least as much as Vader did in an average battle.

He set off the force fields? I didn't see that from the movie. To me it seemed that the force fields were in sequence, and they pissed Maul more than Qui-Gon and even Obi-Wan.

He used the force twice I think: to open a door, and to push Obi.

I'm not counting Force Jumping or enhanced ability, of course. I mean like external use of the Force.

So Maul force pushed Obi-Wan into a pit to try to kill him.

How'se that for external use of the force? ; )

Or are you going to try to tell me that somebody like Vader never made "external" use of the Force either (he never used lightning in the films)?

Doh, I wish we could edit our own posts.. (grumble)

Anyway, I forgot to mention that Maul does indeed use Force "throw." It's been awhile since I reviewed the DVD, but watch the sequence where they are making their way towards the force fields (before they start turning on and all that).

Maul uses the force to toss a piece of mechanical debri (I believe it's a battle droid torso) so that it hits and activates some panel (or switch) that turns the force fields on.

He does this purposly, in order to slow them down, though he must have known he'd have to fight them both eventually, because he leads himself into a corner pretty much (was there any other way out of that room, other than the pit?).

His goal obviously was to give himself some slack in the battle, since he would divide the Jedi (who were ganging up on him) and force them to fight him man to man (much easier!).

Its interesting how the Prequels have introduced something we haven't previously seen in Star Wars (if I'm mistaken, somebody correct me)... a "pure Sith" (ie: somebody who uses the Dark Side of the Force and a lightsaber but is not a former Jedi).... represented in Maul and Palpatine.

My bad, heh, I should scratch that last comment. I added "lightsaber" because I remembered that there have been various characters in the EU like the dark "witches" and all that who didn't possess lightsabers but used the Dark Side, and Palpatine himself (as pointed out before) never uses a lightsaber, except in the purely EU Dark Empire (which wasn't bad, despite it being full of cliches).

Can anyone confirm this? I'm pretty sure he threw some junk at the door switch in the hangar, not to any panel near the forcefields.

I think he's gotten the two parts of the fight mixed up. There is no debris in that part to throw, all the dead droids were in the hangar not in well erm that big chasmy place they were fighting.

You are correct.

As for the lightning, I think that while Maul's capable of it, he's too efficient-minded a fighter to use it when a good Force push will do the trick.

Well, I'll whip out the dvd tomorrow and watch it again, just to set it all straight one way or another. ; )

Too tired or I'd do it right now! hehe

Palpatine must had some practical knowledge of Lightsaber duelling to have trained Maul so effectively. The Sith corrupted traditional Jedi teachings for their selfish ends including Lightsaber duelling.

Before he was a politician, he was a Sith.

Firstly and foremostly, he is a Sith.

According to Lucas and EU, Dooku and Anakin were aberrations from the post-Battle of Ruusan Sith Order's way of doing business. Usual business according to Lucas and EU was to take a kid strong in the force and train him like Maul. I doubt Palpatine was an adult on Naboo who wasn't identified early by the Jedi like Qui-Gon said or was a former Jedi.

You don't start off as a grand Sith manipulator guy. In his twenties and whatnot, Palpy was human assassin droid pawn of destruction of hisMaster.

You're right, Palpatine normally doesn't use a lightsabre or fight much at all for that matter. Dark Empire was a special case.

But Palpatine CAN use a lightsabre and is probably VERY good with a lightsabre. I for one would find it incredible to see Palpatine take on Yoda or Mace (as long as they don't make it screwed up like they made Yoda's fight in Attack of the Clones).

But...the last point is just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Oh yeah, and Official data says that Maul's last test was a lightsabre duel with Palpatine/Sidious. Maul says he moved so fast he could barely see his movements. Maul gave Palpatine a run for his money by completely succumbing to the Dark Side and wanting to kill his own Master. He was then made Dark Lord of the Sith.

The force fields were wandered into by accident...

I watched it again, and I guess its been longer than I thought.

So much for that theory, I stand corrected. :D

If Maul was using his prescience or pre-planning to lure the Jedi appart, we saw no on-screen indication of this...
