Plasma TVs and the "normal" Flat screens (like monitors)a re two different systems.
The plasma TVs excite noble gases in small cells to get a picture, the other flat screens are TFTs, using LCDs to get the images.
Plasmas are not only more epensive than TFT, but have a far lower length of life.

Types of TVs...

Plasma: They are flat-screened, thin televisions that use excited gases to generate their image. They have the advantage of size, but have inferior contrast compared to conventional screens. The early models could not display a true black, though that may have been changed.

LCD: Same thing as on a computer. LCD televisions are somewhat rare, however, and generally are dual-use.

CRT: Standard TV. There are flatscreen and curved-screen technologies; quality can greatly vary.

Rear-projection: A CRT projects an image on a rear-projection screen. This is used for large televisions where it is impractical to use large tubes.

There are various types of projectors as well, but I won't go over them unless someone asks.

Beware of deceptive marketting. Some televisions are advertised as HDTV-ready but require an external tuner to display HDTV signals. (Audio people may recognize parallels in "Dolby Digital-ready" recievers/preamps that were sold some years ago).

That's probably using a high-quality source, however. I've seen well-designed CRTs and rear-projection televisions that are superior to plasma screens. (Then again, I can be picky).
