The hutts were once an influential power, how exactly did they get to that stage? They're physically inept at anything other than giving orders and eating.

Any ideas on how?
Star Wars Databank entry, and other sites speak of how the Hutts are one of the oldest spacefaring races, and how they have been a notable presence for thousands of years. It was the Hutts that defeated Xim the Despot and they have been lords of the criminal underworld ever since.

As for your BULLSHIT claim that "They're physically inept at anything other than giving orders and eating."
SW Databk Entry on Jabba (EU) wrote:Jabba's deceptiveness was legendary among his throng. For instance, when he chose to hire Gamorreans as his enforcers, he had to follow Gamorrean tradition and best the pig-like warriors in combat. While the Hutt may be able to defeat a single Gamorrean in hand-to-hand combat, a dozen Gamorreans was more than he cared to handle.
While Jabba used deception to defeat 20 Gamoreans in one fight, this entry clearly states that Jabba was capable of challenging a Gammorean Warrior in hand to hand combat, something that most species in Star Wars could not hope to do. In other words, Hutts can fight.

This actually surprises me, since they do appear rather slow and sluggish, they must be all muscle then. I won't continue that line of reasoning any more and I withdraw that from my list of knowledge.

Jabba was something of a fat freak due to his eating habits. He was probably more fit when he was younger. There's a novel including a dark jedi hutt (no kidding) that appeared very agile and strong.

Said Hutt outmatched Leia, didn't he?
