I am in big trouble and don't know what to do.

The first thing I'd do is contact your ISP to see if they can give you an Ethernet modem.
Trust me, you don't want to run ICS unless there is no other option.
It gave me no end of headaches.
That said, since you're running ICS, don't bother setting up an internet connection on the router, since it's WAN port won't even be in use.
Go to the router configuration page and set the DHCP starting address for the LAN side to something like 192.168.0.50. This should free up 192.168.0.1 for ICS.
BTW, which router did you get, the D-Link or the Netgear?

Okay first off remove ICS.
Remove the windows firewall in all computers.
Make sure that all computers uses DHCP
Make sure that all computers have some sort of password, windows xp and file sharing do not work so good with anonymious access.
If you are lazy setup all computers with the same username and password and make that user a local admin.
This is a big security issue, but for a small office that has no server and no real networking expertise is a easy fix.

BTW Glocky, I bought that cheap nasty router because I set off to buy it before I saw you post, but to be fair to the soldier, he has done his job well.

Fuck the USB modem, they are crappy and it is a real disadvantage to have a computer as a single point of failure.
Buy a modem that connect with a TP cable and attatch it to the router and the router to the switch.
ICS is pure garbage and you will be lucky to have it working for prolonged times.

Hey my work here is done, I'm never setting foot near that network or office again ... unless I'm getting paid.

Work done for free is never apprieciated, and free work only means that everyone expect you to do more for free.

I tell the family that the first job is free but if I have to come over and fix the same problem (usually Goddamned Kazaa d/l spyware type shit) again, they're paying me $35/hour.Faram wrote:Demand some cash!ALI_G wrote:Hey my work here is done, I'm never setting foot near that network or office again ... unless I'm getting paid.

I should try that. I have become (pretty much by default) the technical guru to my wife's family. (My side of the family is, with a few exceptions, too stupid to use a computer.) Unfortunately, just about everyone of my in-laws is also poor.Glocksman wrote:I tell the family that the first job is free but if I have to come over and fix the same problem (usually Goddamned Kazaa d/l spyware type shit) again, they're paying me $35/hour.Faram wrote:Demand some cash!ALI_G wrote:Hey my work here is done, I'm never setting foot near that network or office again ... unless I'm getting paid.

Phone goes this morning. I was lay in bed watching the Cricket when suddenly:
"Hello is that Gareth? Hello Gareth, I'm afraid that the network isn't working ... can't connect to the internet [...] will you come in and fix it?"
So I go down, arrived at 12.30, came back at 6.30. Not fixed. For some reason ICS just refuses to work now, and also other little annoying things like the main office computer [D1] randomly deciding that it will let other computers access its files and then other times not letting them. The printer sharing still works however.
I have tried everything and I have to be honest I am close to throwing in the towel. It seems so simple to fix; hell, it all worked perfectly when I left it - but apparently it has never worked for the people in the office - as soon as I went home on Wednesday it has not worked since.
Any suggestions? I'm really fed up here especially because I get the feeling that some people in the office don't believe that I got the network working in the first place and just pretended that it worked.
On the plus side my dad has given me £100 for all the hours that I have put into the work, which was very kind of him - I want to repay him with a fully working network, 24/7 365.
Before I forget, I have been authorised to buy a new ethernet DSL modem so that we can utilise the router WAN. Any ideas which one I should get [remember I am UK based]?

I'm afraid I can't be of much help as ICS and all of its headaches are what motivated me to get a router in the first place.
What I'd do is call up your ISP and *demand* an ethernet capable modem, install it to the router, and then follow Faram's instructions posted earlier.
Once you ditch ICS, you'd be surprised how smoothly things go.

Demanding an ethernet modem would be the best option, but we've ran out of time - we need the network working NOW. But I am soothed by your idea that things will work out well once I get the proper modem - I look forward to that moment with baited breath!

Just run the network setup wizard after you shut down ICS (reboot after removing it) and be sure to enable file and printer sharing, make sure that they're all on the same workgroup (MSHOME is the default. Just leave it alone), enable sharing on the drives or folders you want accessable over the network, and reboot.
You should be golden at that point.
All you have to do then is configure the printer drivers on the machines.
