On the Xbox? A full Assault Rifle clip will barely take an Elite's shield down on Heroic, if every round hits dead on, and will leave you reloading before you can start hurting the bastard.

On Legendary it's just not worth picking up at all.

At which point you can start chain-meleeing him if his shield is nearly down. It's hard if there is anyone else around, but possible if you're a crazy mofo like a dedicated AR user must be. Just try going into Normal and fighting a Gold Elite after killing everyone else around him with your rifle butt, and you'll be suprised at how well it works.

I can take out red elites witha full Clip....but I basically have to be with in 20 ft of them and have it on Full Auto.
