Layer Cake and Serenity as bad movies? Katie, I like you but heresy on this scale leaves me with only one recourse:

The movies I've seen this year, in descending order of how much I liked them:

-Revenge of the Sith
-The 40-Year-Old Virgin
-Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Haven't seen any bad movies, since if every critic is panning a movie, and my first impression upon seeing a preview is "That's shit", odds are I'm not going to bother. However, I was dissapointed by GoF.

Haven't seen King Kong yet, but I liked Peter Jackson's LOTR movies well enough and they were certainly over 2 hours and had slow motion. Kong just looks unappealing for reasons I can't identify.

Bad:
Stictly speaking I was very cautious on choosing movies so I avoided any movie which had traces of suckness from the trailers, ads...etc

Disappointment:
Kung Fu Hustle (Yeah, yeah, it was on last year, but it hit the States this year)

The only good part of it was the "normal" kung-fu using Lesser Masters.

Everything else was sort of trying too hard as a parody. I'm constantly pissed of bad portrayal of Taichi in movies and using "Evil God of the Fire Cloud" for the villian who uses Toad Stance is more of an insult than parody.

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe - I remember enjoying the PBS version better; perhaps it was because I was younger then.

Worst:
Stealth - Yuck!

Sin City, Narnia, Howl's Moving Castle, Corpse Bride, Batman Begins are my top 5.

I didn't really see any I didn't like that I recall, though. I tend to avoid shitty movies.

I'm going to go against the grain here and say that I thought Sin City sucked. The only halfway compelling storyline was the Bruce Willis character, because the other characters were typical Frank Miller comicbook characters: so busy acting cool and tough that they really don't do much of anything else, not even obeying the laws of nature or logic.

As for other movies, I liked Revenge of the Sith, I thought Serenity was pretty good (not as good as some would have it because the pacing is uneven and there are a few other issues, but better than its box office showing would suggest), and I thought Batman Begins was quite good despite some glaring plot holes and a particularly horrible bit of pseudoscience which unfortunately constituted a key element of the main plotline of the film.

Of those, the only one I saw in theatres was Revenge of the Sith. It's hard to get out much when you have two kids. As for Sahara, it's not on my favourites list but I don't see why people hate it so. It's got some retarded plot elements but so does Batman Begins. I thought Sahara was an OK mindless popcorn flick.

Of those I care to remember, Sin City was good for being Sin City. Now that is a vital difference then it being good, because if I did not have that point to rely upon and after watching it again, a lot gets lost, muddled and I'm looking at the works of a guy who way too much into crazy bullshit violence and things that only happen in the funkiest of superhero books. Literally it is exactly like Frank wrote it, gritty and utterly a comic book insanity. I'm amazed anyone ever dies short of a rocket tearing through their body...pfft the amount of damage Marv takes, he should laugh off the electric chair. But as a movie take on the stories, it was good.

Revenge of the Sith brought together everything the prequels built up. Which in of itself is a feat and was honestly very good on most aspects...I still cared nothing for Padme.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was just damn weird, but honestly was very good. It was not a remake of Willy Wonka and Burton made sure that if you take the comparison, you're pining way too much for your childhood. Though they strecthed the ending way too fucking long.

Narnia was good, except honestly...it reminded me why I care only so much for the books and never read them again past a certain age.

Batman Begins was what the franchise needed. I enjoyed the story but a couple things really bugged me and mainly was the deus ex weapon. It was such utter and complete insane bullshit science, that it makes the plans of the said comic look actually possible. But I did enjoy the rest as a set up for future films and as a Bat flick it was heads and shoulders above the rest.

Serenity I still love, even after watching it a couple times on DVD and wishing just WISHING instead of a three part series they explained some of the shit IN THE MOVIE, but good stuff nonetheless. Some the pacing is odd in terms of action action..........lull, but the movie is a great season 1 finale, but damn did he pile the deaths on for such a small crew.

Believe it or not, the only movie I saw I cinema this year was ROTS. (But this one three times) It was great and worth every cent.

I simply not found any other interesting movies to watch in cinema, I case you wonder why I avoided the cinema.

I hated Sin City too. Like I said when it first came out, I was happy was Mickey Rourke's character died and I was waiting the whole movie for Dwight to get his ass handed to him on a silver platter. I was rooting hardcore for the Irish mercenaries. What a fucktard.

Best: Wallace and Gromit. No question.
Worst I actually saw: probably the Cave, where a team of divers sponteansous turn into monsters when trapped underground.

Le Temps Qui Reste (photographer spends two hours being a dick to his parents and his boyfriend, smokes, vomits, has a threesome, seduces his grandmother or something, then dies. Everyone in the theater applauded when the waste of skin finally croaked)

The only movies i saw in a theater where Sin City and War of the Worlds.

Sin City is one of my all time favorites while War of the World is one of the most worthles pieces of shit i´ve ever spent money on.

As far as Serenity goes, I had never seen Firefly, my friends made me watch the movie, and I just didn't get it. Like, there were a couple funny lines, but I was wayy too confused to be able to enjoy it. Even now I have no idea what was up with that River chic and what the point of everything was.

Same thing kinda goes for Layer Cake. If I get really confused it's almost impossible for me to really like a movie 'cause I just don't know what the fuck's going on.

Heresy? Maybe.

The Best Movie of the year?
Wallace and Gromit, hands down best and funniest. Howels Moving Castle is also on the bests list, though its by far not Miyazakis best work... Aside from some other obvious choices, Narnia, Serinty, RotS, theres not a lot elese to add to the bests list.

Now for the worsts, well, almost everything else made this year. I mean, this is going to be rememberd as the yyear they made a movie of Duckes of Hazzard... Dukes of Freaking Hazzard people!!!

Why did I waste my time and money going to see 'Doom'? I knew it would suck and yes, it sucked hard. But off I went, perhaps out of a misplaced sense of loyalty to the game. Oh well.

2005 was a really good year for movies, I think. A few of my favorites, in loose descending order from very best to among the best:

1. Serenity
2. Serenity
3. Serenity - Okay, I know a few of you were a little underwhelmed, and some of you just plain didn't like it, but I thought it was hands down better than Revenge of the Sith, and ROTS was fucking amazing.

4. Goblet of Fire - Excellent adaptation of the book, I thought. And I just can't get enough Harry Potter.

5. Revenge of the Sith - Wow. Just wow. Finally a prequel that lives up to the Star Wars name.

6. Good Night and Good Luck - Excellent flick, using a lot of real footage. McCarthy's bullshit reminded me of some of the fundie trolls on this board and Mike's hate mail page.

7. Syriana - If you liked Traffic, you'll like this. It looks at the Middle East situation from multiple angles and really drives home why progress is impossible.

8. Batman Begins - I liked this one, but I didn't think it was as good as people said.

9. 40 Year Old Virgin - It was pretty funny, but also very forgettable. Not a waste of money, though, and I'm glad it's helped to propel Steve Carrel's carreer and helped The Office to succeed.

I didn't really see any bad movies this year, at least not in theatres. I did see Sin City, which was ... interesting. It reminded me too much of Tarantino, who I think is a hack. Blood, gore and violence is all well and good when it advances a story or when it is used to make a point, such as in A Clockwork Orange. When an entire movie is dedicated to wanton slaughter and violence, it's just retarded. The only thing that saved Sin City was Bruce Willis' storyline. Other than that, I can't recall anything that made me retch, but I didn't see all that many films this year.

The Good:

Good Night and Good Luck - Superbly done character peice. I was rivted to my seat seeing this. I was nearly driven to clap at the end it was so good.
Syriana - Just spectacular. A good movie for those who like to think.
Batman Begins - Almost makes up for Batman & RobinLord of War - Cage at his absolute best. An emoitionally powerful tale about morality with a twisted wit.
Serenity - You certaintly can't take the sky from this one.

The Bad:

Doom - Why God, why?
Aeon Flux - Proof that studio execs are nuts.
ROTS - I really wanted to like this but when a CGI creation has better acting then your leads, you have directing issues. Though Obi-wan was excellent.
Constantine - Whow
Stealth - Oh yeah, this movie can work. Let's just hope Jamie foxx didn't kill his career over this.
