I've found to get the kind of music I want, I simply go for European or Japanese music, which I like better anyway.

Anyway, popular songs I hate? Good god. There's so many. Honestly, anything by Black-Eyed Peas makes me violently angry to hear.

As I've once remarked, the My Lumps or whatever it is... that song is an inexcusable atrocity against music.

The UN should be forced to send investigation groups to the Black Eyed Peas to determine whether or not genocide was committed.

The first time my brain heard it, my left brain (responsible for aesthetics and creativity) emitted a tortured scream so powerful that the psychic echo reverberated through the fabric of the universe itself. Things from beyond, elder things the world shall never know, pricked their ears at the psionic cries of pure terror being emitted and bared their noneuclidian teeth at the thought of what could possibly be causing such a cacophony of pain.

It's that bad.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who had the same reaction when hearing the song for the first time. And I use the term "song" very very loosely.

Agreed, last time I had a reaction that bad to "sound" was when I was introduced to the spice girls.
Funny thing is, I asked my sisters if they thought it was "good" music, but they said that it was popular and good, and when I asked them if older popular music like Britney spears was also good they said that it isn't popular today, same thing regarding that blasted milkshake "song".
Give me movie/game music anyday  .

Wait, were they seriously equating popularity with quality?

Most Nirvana songs. I admit i was caught up in the grunge thing at one time myself. However i remember sitting listening to one of their CD's (In Utero IIRC) and i realised 2 things. The first was that Kurt Cobain was a truely shite singer and secondly the music had no soul or passion just plain depression. I'm not suprised he killed himself I'd kill myself too if my sole achievement in life was to make millions of 13 yo's as depressed as I am.

Nirvana annoys the shit out of me. I have no shortage of people telling me how great that band was, but the songs are just boring as hell. Unfortunately, the only rock station in the whole city has a "Nightly Nirvana" thing where they'll play a song or two, at which point I have to switch to the mix station and hope they're not playing pop or rap.

Nickelback, even though I like a few of their songs, belongs here too. They'll give you about 1 or 2 good songs each album and the rest are just total crap.

To continue the tangent RedImperator started, could the decline of rock be partly attributed to a lack of ways to take the genre in a new direction (in other words, no way to spawn a subgenre as distinct as punk, metal, grunge, or merseybeat)? Most of the new rock acts out there that don't suck either seem to be heavily derivative of rock from earlier decades, or have a sound too eclectic to spawn a significant number of imitators.

This reminds me of a question I had... How has movie music changed over the years? Besides the occasional "popular at the time" song or "song that was popular at the setting of the movie". Has it pretty much been what it is right now?

Even serious 80's movies (Gallipoli and Chariots of Fire come to mind) had disco-synth soundtracks, which, at least to me, seem completely inappropriate. I'm not sure when instrumental music became the norm.

Rap's gotten a bad, well ... rap. The genre has become polluted with gangsta rap shit. Unfortunately, it's the most popular rap because it involves living lavish lifestyles with hot babes a beck-and-call away from sitting on your cock. Not to mention the glorification of killing cops, who most inner-city kids have been conditioned to hate and mistrust by their parents, peers and hell, the cops themselves.

But there's plenty of rap out there that doesn't have these qualities and actually does attempt to spread a message that isn't "Cops suck and bitches are for fucking". Look into For Minor, which was started by Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park. Their album is mostly good stuff with some fluff. But the songs that stick out really do stick out. One song ("Cigarettes") that basically compares cigarettes to gangsta rap. They both sell an image, and people don't give a shit about the truth. They just want to feel cool.

I fully concur. I hate that song with a passion. And I can tolerate just about anything, music-wise. Even Goddamned Peanut Butter Jelly Time didn't get to me... but this song did. :x

That's the one that encourages women to dress up like sluts and tease guys at clubs right?

Going by the lyrics, I'd have to say no.

Anything by Green Day and their imitators. Their sound is just horrendous.

Something*Positive has a very amusing take on Gwen Stefani. She's basically the ultimate wannabe cat-girl. This is not a good thing, mind you.

Whoever this "Kaci Brown" is, she is nearly as bad as the Black Eyed Peas. I just recently heard her song "Instigator".

Yes, Kaci, we understand that you are a troublemaking slut who has banged more guys than her tested IQ (which admittedly leaves little maneuvering room due to the grainyness of the numbers involved).

You don't need to torture us with it by setting your horribly mangled voice through a sythisizer and then kicking musical taste soundly in the balls.

The person who let her into music should be forced to commit suicide by autocannibalism.

By itself, the song is tolerable, but the music video takes it way over the top. Not many things are more cringe-inducingly hard to watch than some woman in her mid-30's pretending to be in high school.

ahh music videos... created so that the people would be distracted by the pictures to notice that the song is horrible.

...and it worked on so many people too.... *sigh*

I find most bands have 1-2 good songs if anything, so I try not to generalize, this band sucks etc. Sometimes they have a good B-side or cover. For me a song is good if I can imagine it or put it into a movie scene, songs that compliment a feeling. What I hate more than bad music is the zombies that hear a bad song and immediately need to dance to it, no matter where they are, music....must....dance.....brains......

If I have to hear "My humps" one more time...

And there was that song a few years back where they just sang about fast food. That irritated the hell out of me.

Ah yes, that one. Not to be offensive, but if a girl adopts that kind, no one should be surprised when she winds up the victim of sexual assault. It's one thing to dance with a guy for fun, but to blatantly tease him with no intention of giving him an inch is just fucking cruel.
