Suddenly finding yourself in a town that shouldn't exist and with random dimensional shifts featuring creatures of an unknown origin, well, that's shit scary and something Mulder and Scully should look into. The unknown works on you more mentally even if hardly anything really happens (how many modern horror movies have bored people because you see the monster as often as possible as really obvious, if expensive, CGI?).
True, although, I did know a bit about RE before I played it, that it was the T-Virus, etc, and some of the really B-movie looking bits at the start always made it hard to find scary.
If I remember right, Silent Hill should exist, and the guy you play in SH1 was going there as a holiday with his daughter, it's the dimensional shifts that shouldn't be, adding extra buttons to lifts and stuff when you re-enter them. SH does play heavily on the unknown and building it up, and it's all the better for it.
At least that means if I get hooked I have a nice franchise to go through for a while.
Indeed, without, as far as I know, any embarrassing editions *cough*RE Survivor*cough*.

Eh, the first Survivor was a bad attempt at crossing Time Crisis with survival horror. Bad execution, because the Dead Aim is supposed to be superb. I'm currently doing RE0 and the first Outbreak currently (damn the lack of NET support).

I could see a co-operative SH game being interesting.

Couldn't say, the only lightgun game I own now is Virtua Cop 2 for the Saturn. A fair few of my old PS games, including RE2 and RE:N have gone walk-about, and I doubt I'll see them anytime soon.

Haven't tried RE0 or Outbreak either, the last I had was Code Vernoica X when I first bought my PS2. Didn't think it was hugely great, nice to see a cross-dressing villain though.

If you really want to try SH though, pop over to Ebay, I just had a look and saw a copy of SH1 for £1.30.

I always thought that the alternate hell like plane that randomly appears was when the town was misty like that and normally it was just a clear town, though empty.
Broadly, yes.

The events of the first Silent Hill are what causes the alternate world to start superimposing itself on the real world. After that point, particular people who go there find themselves in the misty alternate town, where they encounter the monsters, and occasional shifts into the even more twisted versions of the town.

Different people can be in the town and percieve it differently as well. Laura in SH2 doesn't see any monsters, and Angela sees everything as being on fire, with mutilated female torsos on the walls. Angela was sexually abused by her father until she eventually stabbed him to death

Some people just go there and find a normal (if fairly decrepit) small north american town (In the games probably in Maine, though the film seems to have relocated to WV).

As for the differences between Resi and SH, they are inspired by different brands of horror writing. Resi was unashamedly born from George Romero's films, whereas Silent Hill comes from the more supernatural Stephen King books, and from others like him. (one of the many posters in the original Silent Hill is actually one that King made for his Student newspaper, and all the street names are of SF/Horror authors)

It makes sense to move it there for the story. If you read the articles that Sean Bean is looking at in the trailer, it says Silent Hill was a minning town, and the coal deposits are still burning under the town. From the recent real life news I'd say there are atleast a few minning towns in WV, Tevar posted a story in N&P only yesterday about an accident in a coal mine.

Plus, I guess Maine may have had enough fun what with having Ring 2 there at least, forget if the original US film was there too.

I don't believe any film has yet managed to give me the scares and shocks that Silent Hill did while I was playing it. I can only hope the the film can repeat that.

That depends. If they keep it as a psychological thing as opposed to "look how gruesome our CGI is" thing, then it should work. A movie doesn't have the length or depth of a game which could be 20+ hours of plot driven horror, so this is a little harder.

And depending on the level, half of that time is tip toeing through the streets with the radio blaring going "wheres this bloody monster, if it hits me once I think I'm dead."
Also when you had the rumble pack the controller was supposed to vibrate when your life was near an end. Did anyone else find it never worked until you'd already been killed once?

That sounds like it'd get annoying. The only similar experience I've had is with bleeding in MGS2/3 where the controller vibrates until you cauterize or bandage a wound.

As far as I could tell, or remember at this time, the vibrating was the only way to know you were running out of health.

I know that in SH2, in the inventory screen, there's a still of James in-game, and depending on the color tint of the screen, you can interpret what shape he's in.

Though there's some debate amongst fans as to whether Laura is "really there" or if she's just another figment of James' tortured psyche. Note the discrepancy in the Lakeview Hotel: we know that it was long since destroyed by the time James returns in SH2, but Laura doesn't seem to notice that it's a burned-out husk...

And I can't help but wonder if Angela didn't really see the Doorman monsters as her father incarnate.

As to the names of the streets: off the top of my head, there's Bachman, Bradbury, Sagan, Koontz, Crichton, and et al in the original game alone.

Lost Memories indicates that she is real, and was at the same hospital as Mary.

.

It is. The monster's actual name is "Abstract Daddy". The design resembles two figures on a bed-like object. That is her conception of her father. They only appear when she is around.

Damnation. I've been meaning to get Lost Memories for some time now, and now it seems that I've an excuse to do so.

My memories of the fourth game are rather vague at this point, but I do seem to recall a nurse named Rachel who was mentioned as living in Henry's apartment complex. Could this be the very same nurse who tended to Laura and Mary at the hospital...?

I didn't think this warrented a new thread, but there's a new, longer trailer featuring a lot more of the movie out now. Check it out: http://www.gametrailers.com/gamepage.php?id=2334

It leaves me feeling mixed. There seems to be more people running about (in the church scene there seems to be a dozen or so) and they included scenes with the main character's husband outside of Silent Hill. Both these detract from the feeling of being very lonely and giving those moments with other people a lot more meaning. Meh. The rest of it looks nice, though. The creature effects seem good and the Hell scenes look cool. Just hope that the times outside of it are suitably creepy it. Though, it looks like more "look at the creepy little girl run around" stuff. Hopefully not.

It's pretty clear that Christopher (the husband) will be in the "real" Silent Hill, while everyone else is in foggy Silent Hill. They'll probably be able to hear each other, or even catch a glimpse, but they won't be able to interact in any meaningful way.

As per all the people (plot speculation): They're probably all part of the cult.
