AGREED!
Open the door Private!
Sir yes Sir! (Woooosh! Rocket to door Kaboom!)

Christ. The XCOM deformation is absurdly primitive - being side-based - compared to SS. Since SS is at least equal in all other (tactical) respects, I don't see how XCOM can be considered superior in this or any other tactical respect. Its advantage lies in its well realised setting and strategic model, which I maintain is a bit unfair to use in a comparison of tactical games! :P

At least in SS you can use explosives to collapse the whole front of a building, to expose units on upper levels. I personally enjoy booby-trapping front doors and sniping them to detonate it: destroying the whole front half of the house and dropping the unsuspecting British into the basement is always worth a laugh. No flying suits, though.

Well, as mentioned before, XCOM DOES have excessive firepower to do the remodeling with, while SS is shackled with more-or-less standard projectile weapons.

P.S. JA2 also had XCOM-style destruction of its enviroments, however it also suffered from a lack of weapons to do it it effectivly. While we're on the subject of JA2 and destruction, theres nothing like getting 5 enemies in a group and then having 2-3 people fire grenades from the M203's at them. The blown to bits effect is especialy gory

*dreaming*
A cross of X-COM 1 and 3 with new graphics would be sweet... collapsing buildings... maximum height > 4 levels... 3-dimensional explosions... lighting conditions... HWPs... scavenge-able body armor... the whole thing with the mood of the original...

I'm getting off-topic, am I?
