How much would a decent Fan Movie cost?

Wikipedia references a Star Wreck Forum thread (all in Finnish) that apparently says the budget was 13,462 Euros, which is $16,111 USD. However, it took 7 years to complete with a lot of hard work.

The problem with budgets like that is, you can't expect to get that many freebies. If those movies were made with everything having to be paid for you would get hundreds of thousands of dollars, especially with 7 years of labour. I think a minimum of 500k is needed to make a decent non epic indie film, and 1-2 million to have enough CGI to up the scope of the whole picture. Especially for Sci-Fi where you can't exactly use everyday locations without being cheesy.
