IGN has a new interview up:
Link
A few new screenshots as well- including a larger version of the one on the website with the French Knights.
Also, the 3d unit view now has the "Armoured Swordsman" unit up. That's new, didn't have that in the original. They're apparently English units.

Definately going to need a video card upgrade before I can play this game. Between this, Supreme Commander, and school, I'm gonna be hurting on free time.

IGNPC: How are cities going to be different in Medieval than they were in Rome? Are cities easier or harder to defend?
Bob Smith: Medieval 2 features a new rendering system for settlements that builds them around the environment. This means that settlements can now incorporate hills, cliffs and slopes in their layout, making them far more realistic. This system can also introduce another level of defence to a settlement as attackers may have to overcome environmental defences before they can even think about breaching city walls. The city and castle defences themselves can also be far more resolute. In some cases attackers will have to overcome both an outer and inner wall before they can claim the settlement so attackers will have to develop a more thorough strategy when seeking to seize a settlement. They can't simply throw numbers and siege weapons at the problem.
You have no idea how lovingly this sounds. I think this game can finally give rise to a propper LOTR mod.

Psh, with enough peasants, anything is possible. I had a friend who played as the Holy Roman Empire, built up armies of nothing but peasants and spearmen, and simply swamped the enemy under through sheer numbers.

Do we know when the cutoff date is for the game? Is it going to be around the mid-sixteenth century and starting in the 12th?

From 1080 to 1530, last I heard from an IGN interview. Four and a half centuries for Byzantium to conquer the Italian Peninsula.

BIG UPDATE
The totalwar.com page has been significantly improved, with lots of new information and a new, more fancy setup.
Among the first factions it has in the faction list (you can click for more information) are the Byzantine Greeks, complete with small screenshot of what I
hope is not a Cataphract. Not as cool looking as the original Medieval ones.
But I'm really annoyed by this:
The successors of the eastern Roman Empire, they start in control of western Turkey, Greece and the Southern Balkans. Initially their military situation is weak due to the recent disastrous battle of Manzikert. The army has heavy cavalry armed with lances or bows, supported by horse archers infantry spearmen and archers. Later in the game their units will be a little out of date reflecting their conservatism and ancient lineage.

Oh fuck off. Use your imagination, if the player does the game right he'll never become as weak as Constantinople became.
The history section of the website accidentally uses the Medieval entry instead of Medieval II, don't let the info fool you

...
Check the videos section. It appears that they have some wicked killing maneuvers now.
And I am definately looking forward to being able to have a cavalry charge directly at the enemy without getting slaughtered.

that is what I call a fortress. No way you're going to assault that.

My thoughts exactly. Siege. For a long, long time.
One thing that frustrates me is the screenshots continuously show the same units with no goddamn variety.

Anyone else seen the video which has the Cannon Of Mega Death and Doom? i've only seen it once so far, but when it the shot lands it took out a good thirty mounted knights in one go.. should be intresting..
As for that Fortress... That shall be named 'Dead Mans Ridge' and be forever pummled by archer legions

I really don't like the new website design- ever since they activated it, they haven't updated the units, or the factions, whereas on the old website we saw a new unit every damn week. Heck, the units they have there are actually less than those on the old site. It's really lame.

Indeed, i thought it was just me that was getting annoyed by that.
By the way, have any screenshots of the campaign map been released yet? I'd quite like to see if they have expanded the map to include of more Africa -india etc, such as they have done in Alexander.

A small quibble, but I noticed that there wasn't any gore at all in the video. Hopefully the gore levels will be customisable in the actual game, because bloodless battles seem rather sterile.

Troops get muddy and bloody as battle goes on, but actual gore nuh-uh.

Will adding blood seriouslly add much to the overal enjoyment of the game? I seriously doubt it. I would rather that the developers spend time honing the diplomacy system than putting in blood. Would it be nice to have blood? Sure, after the developers have improved diplomacy, AI, and other game play features. Morever, its something that many modders have been able to already do. Let CA do the major game additions and let the modders add in the blood themselves. And finally, CA has already made it clear that they will not be putting in blood in their games.
