I think SAMAS is talking about the re-drawn ones were Garfield is just a normal cat.
Ever since Lyman went off and became a detective down in Florida, Jon hasn't had any friends. Not even at work.
...Oh my god, what does Jon do for a living? Does he even work at all? You never see him getting ready/coming back from his job or anything.
Jon's a cartoonist who works out of his house. They used to show him actually working on cartoons back when the comic started, but I don't think they've had him doing that for decades.

Yes. I actually liked the old Garfield books (it wasn't that bad in its REALLY early years.) I think that he only used that area of humor, literally, in the first year or so. It was a very short-term subject.

Jon's a cartoonist. Hence the first strip.

I say again: Does he even work
at all?

I'm sure it's just a matter of him spending as much time brainstorming and drawing each week as Jim Davis does.

So, no, he doesn't work at all.

Jim Davis is the exception, not the rule. Keeping up with a syndicated strip can be absolutely brutal.

Well, then again, Davis also has a staff doing the comic these days...
