That part of the base is the abandoned, original Tourian. Why they'd bother installing new versions of the old lights without fixing anything else escapes me.

I meant what happens when he is defeated. Does he explode into nothingness like in the 2D games or does he die offscreen what?

The Chozo statues blast him off the platform. Essentially, it's implied that he's dead, but he doesn't die onscreen. I'm of the belief that he suffered Phazon exposure after the crater collapsed, which is why he's such a bitch in Super Metroid.
