Their new spicy chicken sandwich is quite good. Their chicken nuggets aren't that bad, either. Buy I find that their fries are only decent if you manage to get a really fresh batch.

I've always felt McDonald's fries were at the top of the fastfood world.

Rally's fries are the best fast food fries, IMO.

Why exactly does all McDonald's food have that same warmed-over, "not quite fresh" taste?

Cause if you don't get it made in front of you.. it sits under a heat lamp..

How can you talk about "Animal Style" and then say McDonalds has the best fries you filthy traitor!
For the record, In N Out Animal Style Fries = Greatest Fries ever. God forbid a place actually use FRESH POTATOES in their fries.
Darth Wong wrote:Why exactly does all McDonald's food have that same warmed-over, "not quite fresh" taste?
Because it is warmed over and not quite fresh. Especially during those lunch rush hours where you see a row of burgers stacked up on the tray behind the counter waiting to be put into bags.
Also, when I was younger, my friend who worked at McDonalds admitted that he and others consistently peed in the pickles.

I guess I just find it surprising that the warmed-over taste is so bloody consistent.

The clocks have special numeric markings in black and red writing. These correspond to the tabs on the food when under the IR lamps. After a set time, usually 15 minutes, that food is taken off and more is made. It should be that way, but when I did my two weeks work experience at a local Drive-Thru (don't ask, I originally wanted BAE Systems), they didn't recycle that much.

Generally I avoid McDonalds too and have only been eating there as of late because they have a sausage bisket and hashbrowns for a dollar spaecial going on.
Personally I'm waiting for them to fully automate McDonalds, except for cleaning staff. Just make the entire thing one giant vending machine and completely eliminate the human element. They are working towards it too, what with everything being a picture instead of a word behind the counter.
Which is kinda terrifying now that I think about it. They don't trust their workers enough to be able to tell the difference from "BIG MAC" and "ICE CREAM" but they do trust them to sanitarily handle food fed to dozens of customers an hour?

McDonalds isn't bad for what it is. For a two bucks you can get a double cheeseburger and fries. If you're expecting anything more than a $1 cheeseburger, well, you're going to be disappointed, but it's passable when you're in a hurry.
The attempts at diversification aren't solely a McDonalds phenomonon, though McD is particularly egregious about it (they actually tried to sell a cheesesteak around here--that went over about as well as you'd expect). I remember a few years ago Burger King was introducing new stuff all the time, generally with lousy results. Wendy's has actually been successful with a diverse menu, but they haven't tried to compete with other people on thier own turf (nobody else is selling chili or baked potatoes, whereas McDonalds is trying to muscle in on Subway, Quiznos, and any number of local and regional outfits with this toasted deli sandwich). If I recall correctly, Hardees/Carl's Jr. have a diverse menu, but they got their asses kicked in when they tried to push into the Northeast. Roy Rogers was a burger AND a fried chicken place, but they were mismanaged into the ground and the only ones left are on turnpike rest stops.
EDIT: It turns out, Hardees bought Roy Rogers, sold a bunch of locations to other chains, then converted most of the rest to Hardees, which failed. So the chain was doing just fine until corporate bungling wrecked it.

Darth Wong wrote:And why do they continue their strategy of expanding by opening more branches in this already overcrowded market segment, especially when those branches are often too close to existing branches and end up causing fratricidal losses?
That is the McDonalds way of doing business, they make their money through licensing their brand to independent operators. The corporate profits don't come from selling hamburgers but from the selling the franchise. Back before the market was saturated they made billions with this strategy, now it's not doing them so well.

I stopped going to McDonald's about 2-3 years ago. When they started coming out with their chicken selects, actually. I remember getting them, thinking they'd be okay, however, they were horribly dry things. So, now, I just hit up Hardee's, Arby's, or local subshops or the guy selling gyros when I want quick food that I don't have to cook.
Also, while this is completely anecdotal, my mom says one of her coworkers has a sister with a chicken allergy. But she can eat the Chicken McNuggets without a problem.

So, now I'm a bit frightened about ever touching a McNugget again.

You can get deal with the warmed-over taste by asking them to make your burger special. Maybe ask them to leave off the onions or pickles, something that won't make a big difference. That way, you get a fresh burger.
The fries, of course, are a crapshoot.

Nonsense. Proper chipshop chips. Big greasy bastards, that you can actually tell are made out of potato.
Thin pissy little "fries" are for wimps.

They have these things called "Universal Holding Containers" They're basically heated slots where you stick the food until you put it on the burger. Once someone makes the meat, it's in there until it's used up.
I once saw them put Quarter Pounder meat in there, and leave it there for
TWO HOURS. Meat is never supposed to stay in a UHC slot for more than fifteen minutes. I tell people about this, and their reaction is "We're not eating it."
There are maybe two or three other employees besides me that actually give a rats ass about the freshness of the meat.
It's because, at the end of the day, the managers have to count up how much meat was thrown in the waste containter, and if there's lots of stuff inside it, they bitch at the crew for "wasting food," even though they told us to make two full trays of meat, when we only needed one.

The only fast-food place I like is Arby's. Mc Donalds always leaves me feeling very sick... and this is from someone who chews her own toenails.

Hmm...wasn't it last year that they tried out the McLobster salad sandwich in a few Canadian cities?
Last time I ate at McDonalds, they didn't get a single fucking part of my order correct. Wrong burger, wrong sized fries, wrong drink, a fucking apple pie instead of an ice-cream cone and it wasn't bagged to go like I ordered. Took forever to get that sorted out.
Next day I had the worst case of the shits I can remember as well.

There's a guy I know at my work who used to work at McDonald's, and man has he told me some stories. Last year, I bought a shirt that has a twisted-looking "M" on it and says "McSatan". When I went to pay, the clerk looked at it, and said "That's so true! I'm not a vegetarian, or anything, but the last time I ate there I got so sick!" I think McDonald's has good fries, but Carl's still has my favorite burgers. In-N-Out is good, but man, it's always so damn crowded. And hell, if I want a deli sandwich, I can get one at the local Vons for $3, and if I use my Vons card and get 7, I get one for free!

Those crazy sandwich-subway thingies McDonalds sells in AU are fucking GARBAGE. One morning my girl and I drove down the road for some videos et al... and I figured, 'bacon and egg and shit? Can't go wrong'. I was totally wrong - tasted like limp, damp shit. All for slightly less than I could have got a kickass Subway thing not ten metres away. I agree that it's absurd for McDonalds management to think the can reverse the downward slide by adding various bullshit to the menu. McDonalds is even the worst burgers in Australia - I understand quality is different elsewhere - but here, McDonalds and Jacks are the bottom of the barrel.

Because it is warmed over. I'll eat there when I really want some good fries. I almost always just go to Wendys, Sonic or Taco Bell.

Everytime I have tried the McDonald's breakfast menu, I felt like I needed to vomit for the next three hours. Every time.
As to the food itself... there's a reason I haven't been in a McD's in about five years.
