Shortly after Unreal was released, and a year after DNF was announced. It was originally going to use the Unreal engine (which also had portals you could see and shoot through).

I remember hearing plans, and even some VERY early screenshots, before DNF was actually announced. They were talking about it at the same time DN3D was released.

I remember those screenshots. But Prey isn't the pathetic case that DNF is. DNF has been in development all this time. Prey, on the other hand, was started, abandoned, and then restarted from scratch many years later and finished in a couple years.

DNF has been started from scratch at least once (twice, I think) if we're to believe the official line from 3D Realms.

EDIT: Having said that 3D Realms did not finish Prey, they ended up sub-contracting it out.
