Is it not possible the additional HTLs are fired from the "windows"? And yes that does sound silly initially, however the DS had the same thing with crewed Laser Cannons (if not TLs) being fired from particle shielded windows in ANH and I'm sure I saw shots coming from the windows when the Executor traded shots with the frigate in RoTJ. So isn't it possible the additional HTLs are not mounted externally but fired from shielded openings all over the ship?

There is such a weapon as seen in the beginning of ANH, after the escape pods are launched. So in light of such, various turbolaser batters, other than the traditional mounted tower version should be included, if allowable.

The ICS:OT shows such light turbolaser-stations in the side-trench of the ISD.

Those are not HTLs though, they are LTLs and point defense laser cannon. While it's possible, judging by the space that external HTLs take up, I doubt there are many, if any, HTLs in the interior of ISDs.

Why not though? I often see comments regarding the small fighter and troop compliments considering the ISD's dimensions. It could possibly be explained by a lot of space being taken up by internal HTLs? Not necessarily crewed as in the LTL's pictured, but internal all the same. It is a way to explain the 60 HTL listing without contradicting the models.

It would also be handy for the very rare occasions where the Empire doesn't wish a warship to look to be a threat, as they'd look much less dangerous with their gun ports closed.

You should keep in mind that this is part of the normal editing process. An author cannot reasonably expect everything he writes in a collaborative environment to appear in print in totally unadulterated form.

The ones aboard the Venator were LTL and not HTL. Those are similar in size to those shown in the picture.

HTL are much larger and their barrels will sticking out of the superstructure and hence very noticeable. A case to point would be the Quad turbolasers the ISD has which protrude out of the hull (and I don't think these are really heavies).

I also won't like the idea of a HTL exploding inside the hull. I can't imagine what would happen when a huge capacitor blows up.

The crewed cannons inside the Venator were much bigger than the ones on the Death Star.

Then they are possibly either the extremely light turbolasers, or just some flak guns or heavy laser cannons.

Thanks for the pictures for the comparison!

You do realise it's possible to stop the barrels sticking out of the superstructure but simply moving the cannons further in?

And I'll admit I know little about capacitors, but I didn't think they were volatile or explosive? More importantly even if the damage they caused by their distruction was greater if they were internal, the likelyhood of said distruction would be greatly reduced.

I just think it's a possible way to explain the 60 HTL listing, and would also account for the small fighter compliment as I said. Going purly on obvious external gun emplacements the ISD seemed under gunned.

I just saw this on the Wiki... ok it may be old news but this is just embarrassing!

"The Taim & Bak XX-9 was protected by quadanium steel hull plating and had an optimal range of 15 kilometers, or a maximum of 100 kilometers. This turbolaser made a deadly weapon against cruisers and costed many credits.."

They're projectile weapons of some kind. you can clearly see them displaying non-linear arcing when fired frfom the guns, much like the Separatist weapons are projectile weapons.

I believe those might be from the NEGW&T. It should be noted that those ranges are probably not firm upper limit absolutes in all cases given:

a.) planetary TLs are listed with a max range of 9,600 km. Yet the planetary ion cannons in the smae book have a max range of 180,000 km (ion cannons are typically SHORTER ranged than TLs - reference The Last command as an obvious example.)

Moreover, numerous novels demonstrate longer-ranged examples (Thousands or tens of thousands of km: Rogue Squadron novels, Zahn trilogy, jedi Trial, Destiny's Way, Star by Star, the Corellian Trilogy. Hell, in the Black Fleet Crisis light antifighter TLs can target starfighters at a range of 1500 km!

100 km is considered "point blank" range in Lando Calrissian and the StarCave of Thonboka.

b.) Same source also states thatTLs can have "double" or "triple" the range of laser cannons (implying hundreds of km), which contradicts that. Other sections in the original suggest tarrgeting systems for Imperial Gunners can target starships on the edges of human sight (thousands or tens of thousands of km minimum) and theoriginal EGW&T flat out stated combat ranges of "thousands" of KM for TLs...

c.) The Death Star in that same book is listed as having a 400,000 km upper limit range, when the SWTJ lists the range as some 47 million km. (to say nothing of multi-AU ranges from Rebel Stand..)

Oh you're definitely preaching to the converted dude. I had just never seen such a ridiculous post on the wiki before. Hell even on present day earth we have land based lasers supposedly able to damage satellites in orbit (though they're actually for predicting weather patterns or something according to the US Govt) so 100KM was so outrageous I had to post it.

Oh and in regard to those pics being of projectile weapons, aren't they displayed under the listing for TLs?
