but if you watch the ANH Directors Commentary they talk about how there was an original plotline for Chewie that they dropped or tried to drop completely that he was a coward (towards the scene after the trashcompactor)
I dont know i always believed that Chewie did certain things so others didnt or wouldnt really know how strong he is
