But you don't get the manual, at least, not in printed form, and it seems to be awesome.
Also, I like my physical disks.

How does the game play, and is it out yet? :P

I see pretty NORAD graphics, and it makes me squee... but how's it under the giant room-dominating world map screen?

HOW ABOUT A NICE GAME OF CHESS?

Seriously, though, how can you win?

The game plays in real-time, though you can speed it up. You get a world map with a region under your control and number of "units" (silo's, airstrips, various ships) you can place at any point on the map that's within your sphere of influence.

As time goes on, you'll automatically move through the different Defcon phases. Defcon I and II allow you to place your units; anything you haven't placed before you go to Defcon III is lost. From Defcon IV onwards your conventional units can attack, Defcon V allows the use of nuclear weapons. Points are awarded for killing enemy civilians and deducted for losing your own.

The midgame combat is mainly fleet actions and recon flights, the endgame is basically a matter of properly timing your nuclear strike, since unused silo's double as AA batteries, so if you fire too soon your attack can be stopped.

I've only played a few rounds and haven't read the manual yet, but that's the basics, roughly.

Do you win when you see a movie?

Even if you assume that every game of this ends in complete annihilation for both sides (a pretty big assumption) you could just be playing for the experience.

You got the defcon order messed up. :P

How many people in SD.net are getting the game? Because we need a tournament as soon as we can.

No. You just hear eerie wailing and the coughs of the dying Parisians blindly wandering through the irradiated ruins of their home town.
You got the defcon order messed up.

The music. Oh goddess, the music. I'm descending into the end of the world, and I LOVE it. I love the kill count, I love the 'Los Angeles hit. 3.6 million dead', I love the terrible, haunting cries behind the slightly warping ambience as you start running out of stuff to throw.

Everybody dies. This game is apocalyptic nuclear :luv:.

Goddess, I sound so creepy at 2:30AM, playing nuclear war. Sleepy time.

Exactly my question...
I would love to have it. Throwing nukes around is what I like to do...

Because of the "Well worth the money if one were to pay for it." comment, I think he WAREZed it.
I am capable of rearranging the fundamental building blocks of the universe in under six seconds. I shelve physics texts under "Fiction" in my personal library! I am grasping the reigns of the universe's carriage, and every morning get up and shout "Giddy up, boy!" Easily.

Most games are released on P2P networks days, if not weeks before they hit stands.

It's more suprising in a digital release, but all it takes is one corrupt person in the chain of production and groups have their release.

Wired did a nice article on the entire warez scene, which, while focusing on movies, is relevent towards games as well. Wired

Bunch of people on torrent sites got hold of it somehow. Maybe a leak in Introversion, though I sincerely doubt that, or a beta version that's essentially the final release.

Seems beta, or something like that. Based on the fact I don't need a key to play!

And it rocks, eerie as hell.

How do I pause the game?
