One small page, so many errors. Where to begin? Well the quoted Caracal Radio system doesn't exist for a start. Go to Thales product page, maybe you can find it, or the named Programmer and Fill Gun. Then you perhaps you can explain why none of the Prefixs used in the Intercept page match Thales own Prefix system.

So lets move on to the "this is how we get the freq hopping key". One, the sets actually used as Burst transmission, this works by a digital voice recorder is activated when you use the push-to-talk button and that communication is compressed, the compression is encrypted and this is then sent in a single burst when the operators finger comes off the button. It is impossible to stay on air over the course of mulpiple hops as the burst for a one hour conversation takes less than 1/100th of a second to transmit. A normal comm is contained inside a single freq without going into another. But what the hell, lets say that against physical possibility it actually happens, and the interceptor unit cathces this 1-in-a-million transmission, they now somehow have the hopping key for every other transmission on that net for the next 24 hrs (despite the sample being far too small to give a pattern). Now all they have to do is decrypt the burst... you know, the 128 bit, randomised key with the added benefit of 'noise' being added to the encryption to completely scramble the encryption from analyse. So all these intercept points have, is a 1/100th of a second burst of static that would take Supercomputers years to break.

But you say, although they specifically mentioned an Encrypted and freq hopping system, maybe they meant the old British Army Radio. That was fixed Freq and had no bult in iencryption. they must have meant that. Unfortunately all transmissions on that system bar 2 are in BATCO, a single use code sheet that renders a system of numbers into Letters. The numbers are set on a series of sheets and refer to lines of a report, and without the single use codesheet, and without knowing exactly what role the unit sending it is, you just have something like this :
"Zero, Alpha 10, Bravo, Delta, Whiskey - Tango, whiskey, Romeo - November, Charlie. Over."

Good luck on decoding that.

Basically anyone with Military Comms experince just read that page and pissed themselves laughing. Now please excuse me as I go change my underwear.

See everyone tomorrow.

Anybody been watching sky news over the last half hour or so?, they had video of (what appeared to be) an abandoned USMC M1A1 with a large gash in the right hand side skirt towards the rear, no commentary though.

Anyone know any thing else?

Compare to this, which was up many hours ago:

http://www.aeronautics.ru/news/news002/news074.htm (the controversial source from iraqwar.ru)
OK, well it mentioned a firefight around Nasiriya, but it claimed that 10-15 tanks were destroyed and that 30 other vehicles were hit. Yet pictures of the fighting in Nasiriya show... small fire from buildings (reminiscent of Umm Qasr) and the reporters on the scene make no mention of destroyed armour.
How does "we haven't seen any pictures" prove the intel was wrong? If you're suggesting we need pictures before a story is believed, I'd like a couple of the 2 British Sea Kings in the drink. That Russian intel claimed they were the SAR varity, mission being to rescue downed pilots...and so today Al-Jazeera are reporting 2 pilots are being hunted in Baghdad. It's the Russian intel which is more probable when you add things up.

Elements of the US 3rd Infantry Division and the 1st Marine Infantry Division ended up in an exceptionally difficult situation. While attempting to encircle Basra from the north and to block An-Nasiriya elements the 3rd and 1st infantry divisions found themselves wedged between the defending Iraqi forces. The Iraqi command used this situation and delivered a decisive counterattack with up to 80 tanks in the open flank of the US forces, slicing through their combat orders. As the result of this counterattack these US units are now at risk of being separated from the main coalition forces and being surrounded.
Except that 3rd Infantry and 1st Marine are both currently outside An-Najaf
The concept of time apparently eludes you.
Rob Wilson wrote: and the reporter with them managed to completely miss out on this 80 tank counter-attack that apparently had them in danger of being cut off.
So?
Rob Wilson wrote:
By 1100hrs MSK Iraqi units advanced into the US attack front by 10-15 kilometers and Gen. Tommy Franks, the commander of the coalition forces, ordered his troops to switch entirely to defensive operations. At the same time he issued orders to the forward-deployed coalition tank units to halt their reconnaissance operations in the directions of Es-Samaba and An-Najaf and to move immediately to support the defending US forces. However, the situation is complicated by the fact that a part of the coalition tanks are currently disabled due to the lack of fuel and are awaiting the arrival of fuel convoys. Thus the tanks are able to gradually rejoin combat in small numbers as the fuel becomes available
All those watching the broadcasts from the lead units will be astounded by that bit of news as they went striaght from Basra to An-najaf without stopping/turning to rush back to defend their other units.
You've watched un-interrupted, complete coverage of their progress from Basra to An-najaf?
Rob Wilson wrote:
The top US military command is planning to enhance the coalition command. During the Joint Chief of Staff meeting its Chairman Gen. Richard Mayers expressed strong criticism of the actions by the coalition commander Gen. Franks and proposed to strengthen his headquarters with several other senior military commanders.
How do Russian journalists know what was said in a JCOS meeting, pray tell?
These intercepts are apparently undertaken by GRU, not journalists.
Rob Wilson wrote: At best this is them embellishing any facts they do get, to make it sound more newsworthy (Nasiriya), at worst they're just making shit up (the bits I quoted).
Again Russia has less reason to lie than the US and British.
Rob Wilson wrote: And as to them printing news of resistance to the advance ahead of the reputable news sources, this was online several hours beforehand
Elsewhere, the US 3rd Infantry Division has pushed into the centre of the country before running into resistance at the city of Nasiriya - a key crossing point over the Euphrates river on the way to Baghdad.

The BBC's Gavin Hewitt, who is travelling with the division, says the enormous convoy of tanks and armoured vehicles has engaged Iraqi forces with artillery and rocket launchers.
Strange how he left out the enemy armoured thrust through the lines.
Which proves nothing.

About 30 Iraqi troops, including a general, surrendered today to US forces of the 3rd Infantry Division as they overtook huge installation apparently used to produce chemical weapons in An Najaf, some 250 kilometers south of Baghdad.

One soldier was lightly wounded when a booby-trapped explosive went off as he was clearing the sheet metal-lined facility, which resembles the eery images of scientific facilities in World War II concentration camps.

The huge 100-acre complex, which is surrounded by a electrical fence, is perhaps the first illegal chemical plant to be uncovered by US troops in their current mission in Iraq. The surrounding barracks resemble an abandoned slum.

It wasn't immediately clear exactly which chemicals were being produced here, but clearly the Iraqis tried to camouflage the facility so it could not be photographed aerially, by swathing it in sand-cast walls to make it look like the surrounding desert.

Within minutes of our entry into the camp on Sunday afternoon, at least 30 Iraqi soldiers and their commanding officer of the rank of General, obeyed the instructions of US soldiers who called out from our jeep in loudspeakers for them to lie down on the ground, and put their hands above their heads to surrender.

Today's operation is the third engagement with Iraqi forces by the First Brigade of the US army's 3rd Infantry Division, since Saturday afternoon.

So far in the campaign, the brigade has suffered no losses. But two were wounded Saturday night in an ambush on the outskirts of As-Samwah in southern Iraq.

:( It looks like whatever troops in the area thought that it was a bunch of Iraqi troops and thus opened fire.

Iraqi TV broadcasts POWs:

http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2003/03/ ... 95010.html

Here's some more vindication of Russian intel, quote from the article above:
Two of the prisoners shown by Iraqi TV said they were from the 507th Maintenance Company.

The 507th Corps Support Group provides supplies, equipment, repairs and maintenance and would usually provide support as far forward as possible to the 82nd Airborne Division, the 3rd Infantry Division and the 101st Airborne Division.
Now Russian intel, dated and posted on the 22nd:

http://www.iraqwar.ru/iraq-read_article ... icleId=399
During the past night a fuel supply convoy of the US 3rd Infantry Division was attacked by Iraqi special forces. Up to 7 fuel trucks have been lost in the attack. Three US soldiers were killed and nine wounded. Another three US soldiers are considered MIA and are believed to have been captured by the Iraqis.

Russian claims about the fuel convoy are unsubstantiated unless they claim the 507th was a supply formation and each casualty they speak of was actually a prisoner.

I've just heard reports myself - posted on SB.com - that an American armored peronnel carrier was destroyed by rocket fire. Fifteen troops died from what I've heard.

There will be many more Coalition casualties before this mission is complete. There will also be many more Iraqi casualties -- the Iraqis seem determined to fight for Saddam. Furthermore, since Iraqis faked a surrender IOT attack US forces, soldiers will be less inclined to take surrendering soldiers at face value and more inclined to open fire and then accept surrender from whoever is left alive ... if the soldiers don't just double-tap the survivers in the chest (dead Iraqis can't turn on you or fake surrenders). Word of how captured US soldiers were treated will filter back to the combat troops, and they will be very un-inclined to surrender, be very un-inclined to accept surrender, and be very inclined to fight ferociously.

Cool down. They probably say the same thing whenever they see smiling American or British soldiers giving the "thumbs-up" sign to reporters and photographers while a bombing campaign is going on.
