I dear hope for the sake of humanity that you even watch other games? I hope you can comprehend that there are other teams beyond the USA's group that you can hoot like an ape about. Then again you're probably like England. Putting too much faith in it and all.
Wow. How many jocks used to pick on you? Butthurt much?

And seriously dude, talking shit is half the fun of watching sports. Sorry you can't quantify the fire power of the winning goal Vs hyper phasic goalie shields.

I am not sure how your joke even worked there considering I am loving the sport going on in this cup so far. It's not like trash talk is limited to them.

I'm not talking about the other games, because I really don't care about them. Outside of South Africa vs. Mexico, every other game I really just couldn't get into, or even care who won or lost. How is this a bad thing?

Özil. Özil. Özil.

What a fascinating and gripping game.

Socceroos go out in a blaze of glory

At least they denied Serbia smug rights!

Well, the Socceroos finally had a good ref - the only cards pulled out were justified and he didn't make any blown calls that I saw - and it seems that they all finally clicked and had a particularly good game too. Except for the fact that Serbia seemed to be firing shots with alarming regularity, at least Schwarzer was on form and the Serb strikers weren't. I also loved Cahill telling the Serb who dived on him how it was when he pulled him back to his feet against the Serb's will - I particularly like how the ref recognised that it was a blatant dive (for once) and ignored it.

But we're out anyhow - there was no way that we were going to make it through with that Germany match on our balance sheets. Our goal difference problem would have required us to curbstomp Ghana or Serbia, neither of which was going to happen, to just have a chance of getting through. Can't wait to see the national outrage today.

The Brazil ref in the Ghana-Germany match was very good as well.

I wonder if I should be a trash talking patriot that's having fun douchebag and tell Australia and Serbia to....nah, that would be an unkindly thing to do.

I know you Germans don't give a crap about us, but pretty much every one of my fellow brits is stoked we got you guys in the next round. The pubs will be rocking.

Yes, yes, my good man, quite uncivilized.

Of course you HAVE to know that I was rooting for a Ghana win, just so we could face off. :D

Just consider yourself lucky that the Roos didn't play that well in game one.

Well, you still had the defence mistakes that allowed the serbs to get two huge opportunities in the game.

That said, get yourself some new young players and Australia will be a real darkhorse favorite next time. It seems that you came to the field with a very old team and were unable to match the speed of younger teams. Australia was a decent team this time, maybe next time they will be better.

Well, England-Germany is a classic, so a lot of Germans are stoked as well. That said, why are the English that much into matches against Germany?

The phrase 'two world wars and one world cup' comes to mind. Childish as that is.

Noway, We're going to win. I wish they'd gone out today, at least, it'd be over and done with. Everyone always hyping England beyond all reason is why I find big tournaments so fucking annoying.

Either way, the US will be facing a team that ruined them in a previous World Cup; Ghana beat us 2-1 in 2006 to send us home from the groups.

Well, you already excised Australia from Western Civilization in the Mossad thread ("To me, "Western civilization" is just a terminus technicus for Europe, The USA and Canada."), I don't think there's anything that would be more unkindly than that. :P

Am all up for a England-Germany match but I have a sweep stake that has germany fto win this world cup so money takes priority, so I say good luck to germany and hope that it goes to penalties once again!

Whoever wins out of England & Germany (Germany) will likely have to beat Argentina, then Spain, then Brazil to win the thing. Ain't gonna happen.

Lest anyone in France think that any of the FFF is leaving South Africa with any trace of class.

It's much worse than merely "refusing to shake hands" with Parreira after the game. It's like... an active attempt to display as little human decency as possible. Fuck France. They got in by handling the ball, and left while refusing to shake hands with an opponent who was underskilled but tenacious and honorable.

I have loads of friends who play soccer. They don't dick around, diving just isn't common in their matches because the rewards aren't big enough to justify it. So no, I don't think all soccer players are pussies. I just think professional players need to be hit on the head for being idiots.

They should handle diving the same way they deal with it in hockey: let the official call the foul and the dive. If the dive's still a yellow card, and the foul is called, then they should just give the one yellow and the foul. It might still be tough to call: players should be able to declare to the official that they don't want advantage called and would prefer to take the free kick, but allowing for that would cut down on some of the more ridiculous efforts.
