When I killed the prison guys they 'forgot' they hated my guts, and after I'd killed all of them (and stolen their ammo) their attitude was still better than it had been after I'd killed Cobb.
Useful!

Nope. Not retarded. Forgetful. I was remembering my experiences playing it modded. Derp. Playing it unmodded, yeah, Karma drop for theft got pretty stupid sometimes. That was the reason I carried around lots of purified water to just give to the whiners outside towns.
In NV I had my Karma drop to evil because of theft at once stage, but that was after stealing a fairly large amount of stuff, and one small karma gain brought it back up to neutral.
What I'm curious about is that "stealing" from Caesar's Legion results in karma loss. Stealing from powder gangers results in karma loss. Stealing from the Silver Rush? Nothing. You can clear the whole place out and not lose see that goddamn annoying "You Lost Karma You Bad Person" notification once.

See since most of the stuff I 'steal' belongs to factions that I'm at war with or exterminated, I'm not sure if its even counting. Like taking all the shit from the prison lockers etc counted as 'stealing'...

So I decided to start a new playthrough on 'hardcore' to side with Caesar this time around and lol. Turns out hardcore isn't really that much more difficult if you can change your tactics? If anything it's easier this time around now that I know where everything is.

I played hardcore first and literally the only difference is that healing limbs means 'port to starter town, pay 50 bucks' instead of 'use a stim'. Amazing.
I even took the perk that makes limbs easier to damage.

See, now I didn't do that. I did it like a real world sort of thing. I'd eat food every morning and night, drink water with it. I'd carry a supplies of doctor bags, stuff like that.

Pfft, New Vegas has loads, but the clothing and hardcore are hilarious on their own.
Hated by XXX faction...use their dead team mates clothing to get neutral and start killing them inside their fort!
Hardcore needs food, water and a bed and injuries hurt more? Good thing Food and water are in the first town in large supply, go to whatever of the 10 beds you own, and a doc for 50 caps heals everything(in the first town) again! Oh wait, companions die? Good thing most of them you either never care or are fucking unkillable gods(Boone still makes me laugh as I just go wandering and let him give me free XP).
Fuck, my fave of the whole game is having high luck, high speech and the Gobi make the game go from trivial to see if you can kill everyone in the wastes. If I can't talk it into fleeing, the Gobi is better then nearly every fucking gun in the game. High enough luck, one piece of gear and I have 100% Crit chance.

You could have done that anyway.

If I want a real world sort of thing, I don't want guys that can take whole magazines to the face before dying.

One thing I heard try was change the HUD opacity and stuff until it's completely clear and unreadable, and remove the crosshairs.
That way when you sneak you can't tell if you're detected, can't see if an item is owned or not, etc.
Not really my cup of tea, but if you did that with hardcore and no VATS, you could make a real hardcore challenge, I imagine.

My experience with Fallout 3 made it clear what I had to do. The very first thing I did was get a mod (and do some of my own tweaking) that made the gunfights as insanely brutal as I could possibily get them and still have the game be any sort of playable, started hardcore mode, and went out into the world blind. If you aren't playing a mod where limb damage (not crippling, just damage) causes effects, enemies engage the moment they spot you at 150+ meters, and headshots are instant death for everything but the most hardcore wasteland creatures and toughest armour sets, you're doing it wrong.
I also picked up the refillable water bottles, bullet bending replaced with sight drift, removed orange filter (which also makes night night pitch black and reduces everyone's engagement range to basically point blank) and one that basically axes out the karma system in favour of reputation.
Turns the game from "a nice stroll in the wasteland with autoaiming" to "oh, god, hide behind that rock, he's shooting at me" and makes every fight a desperate life-or-death struggle that a random bullet can turn around, and as an added bonus it makes silent pistol + enemy uniform totally awesome because of all the bonus headshot damage.
Bethesda does not make games. They make settings to put mods on. Playing unmodded is just asking for a miserable experience.

Or ... people could just play STALKER?
One day westerners will be able to make post-apoc games that aren't played for laughs. One day.

Which is even more broken and buggy? No thanks.

..Yeah, see that doesn't sound fun
at all. Guess I like doing it wrong.
*Keeps with the Bethesda game unmodded. Enjoys that.*

If I want a game that's incredibly frustrating I'll just play Demon's Souls.

Based on what? Have you even played it? Amusingly, they did the whole 'pay for patches' thing Beth did with Fallout 3.

The survival mods for Stalker are waaaaaay better than the Fallout ones. The games not being entirely played for laughs helps.
The point remains that if you want to turn Fallout into a survival simulator, you're starting with the wrong material. No doubt you'll continue to disagree with me for no reason, though...

Arrived in the Strip last night and was advised that Mr. House wanted to see me.
So I went to see him. Some robbit told Boone and ED-E that they couldn't go up, so I went in alone. Strangest thing - when I went back outside the Lucky 38, Boone and ED-E were nowhere tobe found. I doubt Boone, with his hard-wired sense of integrity and given that he owes me a Wookiee Life-debt, would simply walk off so I have to assume he has been killed.
He'd better be dead, because if he's not, when I find him I'm going to kill him my...wait...no, there's no way I could kill Boone...he's got enoguh weapons an ammo on him to take down the sum total of the remainder of the human race.
I'll give him a stern talking-to in any case.

There's a known bug companions and the Lucky 38 and getting stuck. Take a look all of the indoor locations to make sure they're not actually inside the building. If they are, tell them to Follow again (they're probably stuck on 'wait'.)

The companions are bugged to shit. Eddie is easily the worst, since he gets stuck everywhere. I manually told everyone to wait outside the 38 and it was ok.

I had more problems with Veronica than Ed-E. She got stuck in the Van Graff's shop staring at the energy weapons until I figured out I could just send her back to the 38. Then she completely disappeared after I finished her side mission forcing me to restart the mission completely.

I've heard they kick out to outside the strip (Outside Freeside) but I haven't checked in the 38 too thoroughly so I'll do that, too. Anyway, I've heard that the bunker that the BoS gives you is way better than the '38 apartment so Mr. House can just take his fancy digs and stick it in his slot
machine.

Gpodsprings source is the only base I need. Water + infinite storage in briefcase. Lol

Hell, Goodsprings has everything you'd want. A doctor, both benches, a merchant, and clean water...oh and campfire just a wee bit out. Obsidian was trying too hard for the RPing crowd, yet gave the first town to have every fucking thing you practically needed for hardcore.
I'll say this much, the Gobi is honestly one of the more broken guns in that game. 5X critical hit modifier. May as well call it the IWIN gun and be done with it. Sadly, it's not the only gun that good in the fucking game either.

Its funny that they put in the M16 OMG BEST GUN EVVVAH and nerfed the laser weapons so bad. Why'd humans even INVENT laser guns again?
Everything I can't be assed carrying or haven't repaired enough to sell yet is in the briefcase at goodsprings. Good thing nobody else in the world looks in containers.

That's weird; I haven't had any kind of pathing issues whatsoever, especially with ED-E (I take that back, actually, there was one time where I went to Helios-1 and he had to go back to gibson's garage and then come back to me at Helios-1....It was actually kind of hilarious now that I think about it.
I was standing at the door to Helios 1 and noted that it was silent (No hoverbuzz). I turned around and noted he was booking it up a small hill and showing no signs of slowing down. I followed him up the hill but he was moving - I mean REALLY moving. no way I could catch up. so I just stood there, eyebrow raised, watching him float away into the sunset.
20 seconds later a tiny speck appeard in the distance and then poof - there was ED-E floating beside me. What could I do except shrug and walk into the facility?
I do recall remarking as I hit the loading screen "F^%cking psycho robot."
