Pick the right companion and the right weapon spread and . . .it doesn't? Long as you change up your strategies a little bit and use other weapons like mines it's still pretty easy.

As far as vanilla weapons go, This Machine is pretty badass.

It's a testament to how overpowered WWII rifles were when even in a videogame with monsters and absurdly low damage, the gun still kicks more ass than anything below a sniper.

Yeah, but you can edge more shots out of the Gobi . Plus I can get earlier then most Sniper Rifles show up, so it was better for what it is.

The only challenge I can see is to actually hinder yourself in multiple ways, but that's no different then the slew of "I beat XXX game with only a healer and drunk!".

Ha, 'sniping' is a 'play style' now! And not just 'the entire combat system is totally broken and sniping is how everyone plays except those going for the melee achievement'.

Its even better that you turn around and twink out the whole game with companions and shit. Its easy solo, the companions are either useless or instant wins.

GR, its a shame the game doesn't support ironman rules (or even ironman challenges) because people love that shit.

I thought that gun was pretty worthless. I used it a few times and went right back to a cowboy repeater.

Yeah, the achievements should be even more pointless then the *10,000 unarmed damage* . Give the idjits something to really strive for in this game!

But never fear! There's some fatas...I mean heroic modder whose genius will come up with something that will be labeled "TOTAL REALISM MOD". Wherein you will need more then just food and water, but find even more useless crap to repair anything, your character will feel pain behind everytime he fires a shot from any gun, and getting hit by anything except a soft breeze will be killing damage and other such nonsense.

Really, it's funny to see how people want to make the STALKER the RPG but even more inane.

Hilariously "unarmed" can be pretty potent with a good pair of spiked knuckles or a power fist. Steal a ballistic fist from one of Caesar's praetorians and you're a one-man punching machine.

The dog-tag punching thing is hilarious; somehow it does mega damage. Dog tags are sharp!

When you say Ironman mode, STRAK, do you mean like death = death mode for the player? 1 save slot sort of thing and if you die, you lose your save and must start over?

People (crazy people) who play indy RPGs apparently like following crazy rules to increase challenge. Is Eschaton 2 for instance it supports telling the player how they're doing, so they can never use melee/ranged, never eat food, never buy anything, shit like that, to artificially increase the difficulty. New Vegas might actullay be hard if you never paid for radiation removal.

Nope. Even after soaking myself in every imaginable hot spot in my quest for more loot, I never paid for radiation removal and still had enough radaway and rad-x to fill an olympic sized swimming pool.
It's really odd that people are so obsessed with M0AR RE4LiZms in game that features pewpew lasers, power armor, mutants and retro fifties technology. Maybe it's because besides Stalker, we have very few games where you can be a uber virtual survivor and drink your own piss.

A game can still have that stuff and yet still play in a serious manner. I don't think that a game's setting and it's gameplay have to be linked in terms of realism. Besides, wandering around as an invicible mobile gun turret shooting off a million plasma bolts at everything that moves and gaming every encounter by abusing a bottomless supply of stimpacks does not fit my definition of fun. A game needs real challenge to be fun, needs to make you ask yourself "Is this fight going to be worth it? Do I really stand a chance here?" instead of "Do I have enough stimpacks to brute force this?"

Victory is only fun when you actually have to earn it by playing well and playing smart. In non-multiplayer games, that usually means you have to stack the deck against yourself.

Stuff like never using vendors, never using any storage, never using stims, never using drugs, never using irons, never using VATS etc would be crazy... but I don't understand the desire to make a game hard in these ways. Fallout is just not hard, and the system is so broken by level 10 you're an unstoppable killing machine who needs to sleep 3 hours every 2 days.

If you had a gas mask it'd be better, though.

Question for you foolios:

Given that I just got infinite money, ummm...which weapon should I pack that is readily buyable at level 16 at, say, gun runners? I have boatloads of 357 ammo, but cant find a replacement cowboy repeater...so I'm considering breaking down the ammo for parts and doing hand loads for the ammo for the gun I buy now. I'm thinkin assault carbine, but how readily available in 5mm ammo? is the DPS/DAM worth it? Boone's rocking a scoped hunting rifle and is doing well with it, and I don't anticipate finding "NEWAWESOMESAUCEGUN#234095809" for some times now.
