Here's my take on HERV--

Since we've pretty much agreed that this virus/parasite is part of the established canon, and it has infected Marina and spreads by colonizing other planets, I am setting up some backstory.

Comets/meteros are frequently seen as evil omens by primitive tribes, and of course there are diseases that mimic vampirism and werewolf-ism, which probably explains where these legends came from in the real world. So I'm combining the tales about 'evil comets' with the way real diseases got morphed into legends, and fitting them into our canon here, where there are "space vampies" with a pseudo-scientific explanation. It also fits that inner Veleria has never been explored or conquered, because it is possible that meteors actually did land there and infect some animals-- so the interior of Veleria may be a seething mass of really nasty vampiric prdeators & the like.

So the old tales about Katangwan tribals staying away from the jungle, ritually killing their infected, etc, may in fact be part of the Terranovan canon that we are just now realizing. Of course, this particular infection was caused by Marina, but it dovetails nicely into established legends.

Anyhow, my idea for it.

Do you know what it means?

If comets and meteors are colonized by these things, then that means our solar system is full of them, since they would've bombarded every single planet for billion of years. And, since they can traverse interstellas distances, the parasites would still be alive everywhere.

All the more reason to get into space quick and build a Grand Army of the Republi-- erm, uhh, I mean, prudent defense measures.

Wait... What story are we sticking to here, is the 'real' reason Marina, and the 'fake' reason this asteroid gig, or are we retconning Marina and is the real reason now the asteroid, or are both now real?

IMHO, the chance that this exact same parasite would've randomly travelled on asteroids to two earthlike planets separated by God knows how much space is...well, astronomical. Especially since the parasite would've to somehow latch onto a hyperbolic body traversing its original solar system, which would then have to pass through our solar system later. And for it to happen every year, even if Keres meteors are hyperbolic, the things would need to colonize the entire swarm. If Keres meteors are not hyperbolic, then it gets even weirder.

I'm leaving it open, because I'm not the GM/Moderator, and the meteor-seed theory can be "made to fit" well enough. If we adopt it as a canon posibility, great, it's already made to order. If not, it is a convincing cover story to use that doesn't involve pan-dimensional vampires and hopping from other dimensions.

As a character, "I" really do think that the disease is probably already there. The "comet theory", to me in this story, explains Marina's affliction and dovetails with tales of monsters and diseases from legend, and evil things from meteors/comets.

In our real world, here on Earth, I think that rare and unusual diseases (while not from outer space) are the types of things that would start legends that gradually get turned into monster stories-- things like dwarfism, giant-growth, other deformities or unusual properties and birth defects become told through time as monsters, demons, etc. Since I believe this from my own background, I'll carry that belief with me into this othe rworld and say to myself "I bet this vampire disease is already here, just no one has found it yet".

So my character would want to do an end-run around Shep and get ahold of it first. This is my character acting in the story-world based on my beliefs about disease & legends as we've seen it in the real-world.

Well, it's certainly a nice avenue to leave open for future moonbase horror stories :D

After all, if HERV parasites can live in space, there are bound to be other nasty things out there. Evolution is cruel, after all.

True. Shroom did kinda get away with detonating a nuke on his own....

And, for the record, I'll admit that weapon was largely developed by Tian Xian researchers. Tian Jiaoan military scientists are busy with other things, unfortunately. I know full well I depend on Beo for a lot of things and I admit that too. :)

TEchnically, Shroomania was given some of the SNC data as well.

Probably most of it: you have them miniaturized enough for 1000 kilogram devices that fit on B-1 rotary launchers.

I mean, we won’t last long against those STAR destroyers, cruisers, and frigates in a conventional war…’

‘We’ll last longer than we would against that Death from the Stars, and we might just take a few of them with us,’ the King quickly shook his head
Karmic Knight = teh win

So I should probably make a story post or something in the near future. I'll, uh, get around to that. Eventually. In the meantime though, I don't forsee mass murder or anything of the sort after Coyote's announcement. Since the "danger" to our continent is pretty damn remote. We're not exactly booming in Velarian trade, after all.

We have our own devices, though Stas hasn't gotten around to write something of a second or so test.

Or the first device tested was already miniaturised, seeing as we took our time to announce the test.
