Well, naval ships generally don't have ww1 camo paint or red stripes, either. We're taking... creative liberties here.

Ranks are fixed up, and the "Callsigns" are for Boardmember->Character reference, nothing more. If you want a nickname, mention it in your personnel file. Not in the title of the file, though.

Ah. Okay, I didn't know that (and neither did a few other people, it seems).

This sounds fun, I've got lots of free time to spare so... I'd be more than happy to take part as some sort of evil oppressor. I've never taken part in a STGOD. I'll work my way through the rest of this thread tommorrow. I remember that I was considering joining when the thread was still in it's original incarnation in Testing. However the lack of attack helicopters put me off :D. Since such things are now on the table, you've got my ear!

I've only read a half dozen or so miltary novels (mostly submarines/spec ops) so if anyone could PM me to help me / offer advice that would be a big help. General STGOD advice too would be nice. Also, I'd like to say:

Young opressor of free peoples seeks other like-minded dictators for fun times, evenings in underground bunkers, formation of Axis of Evil and possibly more. GSOH is a must. Send PMs.

I would like to, with the utmost respect to Uraniun235, point out that there has been another thread in the history of these forums titled "The New World". :P

I note that we don't have much classified story material. When are we going to get started on that in earnest?

Well, I am currently working on the battle system, but if everyone is fine with me procrastinating it I could get started on some backstory right away.

Trying to add some back-story for my character in the wiki, what are thoughts on having him as a rear-admiral in the Australian Navy, but having a GDI rank of captain? There is precident for this, an example is British military forces in British colonies having "local" ranks that could be higher or lower than their "empire-wide" rank.

Hey, you are the one taking a demotion to participate. Go for it.

I kinda figured that someone in control of the largest ship in the Australian Navy and having enough political clout to get australian participation in the GDI should have a higher rank than captain in his native forces.

Woops. I was operating under the assumption that he was a Marine.

I was thinking this could be our fleet "motto" or something. Considering the scenario we are looking at it is fittingly taken from the preface to "Red Storm Rising":
From time immemorial, the purpose of a navy has been to influence, and sometimes decide, issues on land. This was so with the Greeks of antiquity; the Romans, who created a navy to defeat Carthage; the Spanish, whose armada tried and failed to conquer England; and, most eminently, in the Atlantic and Pacific during two world wars. The sea has always given man inexpensive transport and ease of communication over long distances. It has also provided concealment, because being over the horizon meant being out of sight and effectively beyond reach. The sea has supplied mobility, capability, and support throughout Western history, and those failing the sea-power test - notably Alexander, Napoleon and Hitler - also failed the longevity one.

Okay, just to be clear: The wiki is just a highly-organized repository for background information, right? The actual TGOD and related discussion is still going to be taking place here?

That's my understanding of the situation.

Nice blurb, but I think it's a little long for a motto. Those usually are a little snappier.

That being said, I feel as though the motto for the Vengeance should be "Look upon my works, ye mighty, and despair!"

I've revised the terrorist backstory in the Wiki to try to be a little more ... plausible.

You know what terrorist organization would be hilarious to add to the Arcadia storyline? Cobra.

But, of course, there's the problem that since we are competent, the only thing that would keep Cobra alive is massive funding and equipment. Plus the top leaders like Cobra Commander, Destro, Baroness, Tomax, Xamot, and Zartan would be killed quickly. Then Cobra would have to be run by Firefly and Storm Shadow or something like that.

Hey guys. I've always been interested in trying out one of these, so I was wondering (and indeed, signed up just to ask) if you had space for one more? I've spoken at length with Ar-Adunakhor, and would like to take on the position of XO of the Harbringer. I've got a backstory written up already, if you guys are willing to have me :D .

Well, the Admiral is out at the moment, but I doubt he would turn you down, especially if you've spoken with Ar-Adunakhor about it. Feel free to post your bio here and on the wiki (there's a link a page or so back). Three player characters on one bridge is reaching the limit, I think, but we'll manage; the Arcadia has at least four, and the fighter commanders. :)

Well, here's the backstory that I've written up, with some input from Ar-Adunakhor to make sure it didn't clash with his character.

Captain-Lieutenant Alexi Pavlovich, XO of the Harbringer

Alexi Pavlovich was born after the Third World War, and that is his greatest regret. A tactical genius to potentially rival his captain, Alexi desires to prove his worth as a naval commander above all. In his youth, Alexi was a political deviant, refusing to care about the greater good or to live up to the ideals of the communist state. His indescretion about voicing his opinion, however, almost lost him his chance to live up to his dreams of glory. During his attendance of the Frunze Naval Academy, Alexi was overheard disparaging the party by a local commissar, and was arrested. Fortunately for Alexi, Vianor Kurilov, Commodore of the Red Banner Fleet, was visiting the academy to review the annual war games and had taken note of Alexi's brilliant tactical performance earlier in the day. Having no love of the party himself, he stepped in while Alexi was being led away, and used his political connections to have all charges dropped.

Since then, Alexi has been a sort of protege to the commodore. Since his graduation with honors from Frunze, he has been assigned to each of Vianor's commands and become a formidible strategist in his own right. He sees CTF-81 as a chance to finally prove his genius in actual warfare, and to show Vianor that he was worth the risk that was taken on his behalf. Unfortunately, Alexi's overwhelming desire to prove himself makes him somewhat...overeager to perform his duties. He has repeatedly shown his willingness to disregard the possible consequences of an attack in favor causing maximal effect, and tends to favor using the most ruthless of the tactics Commodore Kurilov taught him. This tendancy was best demonstrated during the Sokhumi Incident in 1998, when he destroyed an entire city block to ensure the removal of the Georgian Independence Front's leader, as per his orders. Due to both his effectiveness and position as Commodore Kurilov's favored pupil, his brutal methods have not been questioned as of yet, but they may, in time, cause considerable problems for a force whose stated objective is the promotion of peace.

I am currently working on Mission 01 (working title). The first draft will be submited to the other members of the story team prior to posting. However, the two halves of the task force still have to unite, and the Admiral hasn't even boarded the Arcadia yet. Feel free to ham up the RP with superflous self-agrandizing or inconsequential diologue until that time. Although, granted, there's not a lot we can do until Uranium gets back.

Wiki:
  • Hotlinked relevant words in everyone's profile. (That is, those of you who have made one... we have a lot of people who have not!)
  • Added a public section for various organizations.
  • Added a lot of catagorization to the classified section.
  • Added several things to several lists, in general.
Also, Raptor, if you wish I would be glad to help work on it. Read the comments and feel free to post what you have so far at the link Mr. D provided.
