Yeah, same advice here about leaving the practice ASAP.

When I did it, I would say most fights had people that basically built up and built up to end game units, and then fought in one titanic battle that decided to game.

Upon entering the "real" games, basically the flip happens. You build as FAST as possible as MUCH as possible because often games are decided in the first 10min.

A lot of people play to "zerg" you now, build a few units and then take you out. Its not fun, but you find yourself doing it just to survive. Its Especially common if your doing 2v2 or 3v3. All thats needed is for each side to make maybe 3 units, then you send them all to one player on the other team. 9 units takes out whatever they have, and once one of the team is dead, the game is pretty much over.

It's very easy to counter those rushes if you scout them. Until I started meeting Diamond-level teams (who don't go for all-in rushes) in arranged team matches, it was easy as hell.

That is exactly what is going on in the practice league now. I mean, most games I'm in barely last to 15 minutes because the same thing happens.

Out of the practice league and I'm finding that watching broadcasts of the pros playing really helped my first game in the 'real' league. I don't yet have my apm to the point where I can scout, but I out macro'd a Zerg player so bad I had 65 supply worth of units a full minute and a half before he broke 50 pop. As a player who never had a chance to get into SC or Broodwar - I still had to ask my mom to use the computer to check my e-mail when they came out - it feels really good to get into SCII feeling like I have a shot at actually get decent at the game.

Starcraft 2 Protoss Questions

Is there an ability on some unit or building which lets a Protoss player teleport existing units to a psifield?

Do any Protoss units besides the Mothership have the recall ability?

Well the last two gaming nights have been devastating. Friday it was 3v3 with Kojiro and one of his mates. We wound up in the Bronze league. We won a couple of games but lost three IIRC. Tonight it was me and Spyder and we also wound up in the Bronze league, after we made one excellent win the next four matches were defeat after defeat. We consoled ourselves by fighting the AI on hard... and then lost again and again before finally winning.

I guess I need to get better. I saved some of the replays so that I can look at it and go 'ah here's where we went wrong'. Also, voice chat is crucial for team play. Both nights voice chat was non-responsive and IMO we suffered for it. You need to quickly tell each other what's going on and what you're doing and what the plan of attack should be, and if you can't do that and have to type instead you end up diverting your focus away from the game too much.

I thought the warp gate was for new units only.

You use Warp Prisms as a shuttle. You can switch modes with it and it becomes like a mobile pylon (and if you have warp gates, you can then use the prism to warp in new units). But otherwise to ferry it around the map it needs to be in 'shuttle' mode.

In other news, I am getting better. I am now learning the value of Terran reactive play and my w:l ratio is 11:7 now. Still have to practice a lot, but at least the mass stalker rushes are no threat anymore.

And I found that I love hellions. And ghosts with EMP against protoss.

So, this morning I played multiplayer for the first time. 2v2 Me(Terran) and a Protoss vs. 2 Terrans. managed to drag the game out and hour and a half, although for the last 45 minutes our outlier bases were destroyed and we were stuck on the starting plateau. Teammate goes "Alright, one last push?"(with question mark) then throws everything he has at the gathering army right outside without waiting for a response from me. By the time my guys arrive most of his stuff is almost wiped out with neglible damage to the other team, so I turn around and head back to our plateau. Guy quits.

I spend the next 45 minutes by myself doing a Turkey shoot against the attackers. To put it in perspective I only made 183 units(according to the scoreboard) and killed 493. Even managed to snag a few achievements :)

That's a top effort lonestar. Did you save the replay? I'd love to see it. :)

Uhh...

I don't know? Probably not?

This was in the practice league so, if the postings in this thread are anything to go by, I can't really looking forward to doing the whole "CLIMATIC BATTLE FOR THE ALAMO" thing time and time again.

You should be able to check your match history for your last game, and it should still be there to save. I believe the program stores a number of replays and keeps them for a time until they get deleted, so if you want to keep it permanently you have to select it and save it somewhere.

There was a pretty wicked 3v3 game Kojiro, his mate and I played on Friday night. Kojiro and I were terran, his mate was protoss, I can't remember the map name though. The opposition I believe was mainly protoss and terran. Anyway the game had Kojiro's mate get hit hard by a push from the opposition. Kojiro and I struggled to keep him afloat, he had to retreat and make a second base while his main got trashed, and our reinforcements turned the tide eventually. We went on to recover and we wound up winning that game. It was pretty tense and amazing.

Spyder and I also played a game where he got hit really hard and had to withdraw and make a second base. I did my best to counter attack to buy Spyder enough time to recover, but it was super hard. That was a game that was pretty touch and go as well. But it's good experience to lose, because you can see where you went wrong and go 'next time i won't do that lol'. Plus you won't get better until you learn either.

The greatest game I ever played was TVP. The guy had great cannon placement, so harassing his expansions and main mineral line was near to impossible.

Which kinda threw me into a bind at first, especially since he built a large ground army and managed to move it around from me at first. Eventually I scouted him though (He went for the 4 gate strategy) and transitioned to tanks. He by then had an army of 100+ and I managed to crank out siegetanks. He tried to take my main, but after his first 20 units got slaughtered by my tanks he pulled back and transitioned to Colossi and Immortals. His problem with that was that I had scanned that one too (2 command centers = great scanning potential) and had transitioned to Battlecruisers and Thors (the two thors were basically leftovers, as I was building mass cruisers out of 3 SP).

In the end, my army of 9 cruisers destroyed his main (the three cannons he had placed at the back being no match for the Yamato). He tried to stop this by pulling back his stalkers and throwing his ground forces against my main, but neither worked. My thors cut his colossi down, the siegetanks and marauders did the rest. His stalkers were too late to save his main and my cruisers easily evaded them, before snapping around to destroy his expansions.

He then ragequit.

I guess you could upload it to an internet file share site. Or send it to me in an email attachment. It's up to you I guess. (my email is stofsk(at)hotmail.com)

I'm curious because it sounds like a hilarious and entertaining game. :)

Hahaha

I always try to start a game with 'gl hf' and end with 'gg'. Sometimes I forget, and I feel like an asshole for doing so.

One asshole once suckerpunched me by saying (after I had crushed his early attack)

"I think I'll GG.
Can you tell me what I did wrong before I do so?"

Me being helpful then tried to tell him what he did wrong.

Well, turned out the asshole used that time to transition to mass void rays and then destroyed me with them.

When playing Protoss, always get Marauders. Once they have stim and slow, they're a hard counter to every Gateway unit.

Another very effective tactic is the Destiny Cloudfist build (or so it's called by Husky), or the 1/1/1 build. If he goes air or colossi, you get Vikings. If he's getting Templar, you get ghosts and mech. It's extremly versatile, and I've been having great success with it the last couple days. The best part about it is that you can push out around the fifteen minute mark with a well-rounded army: M/M/M, a few tanks, and vikings for air support. It's really tough for a Protoss player to crack, unless he nails your infanty ball with well-placed storms. Unfortunately, I haven't played Zerg in like a week, so I'm not sure how well the Destiny Cloudfist build works against them.

You don't stop building and attacking because someone said gg. Sometimes they do that to distract you. I had a guy trying to nydus cannal into my main base and attempted to distract me whilst doing it by asking "so, where are you from?"

I just said, "Nice try."

SOemthing I don't like is when someonetells me gg for me. I had a protoss that was sneaky and misleading by building buildings in his main base for my scout and then cancelling it when my scout moved away so that I would not suspect a forward base. I knew something was up but was not sure what it was so i put up a roach warren just in case. He attacked me with zealots so I distracted him with my lings. He proceeds to give me a 'gg.'

For those not in the know, in rts games, your opponent giving you a gg is basically a troll move basically stating I win get the fuck out.

What he did not know was that those lings were just distracting him so that I could get my roaches out. I kill his zealots, attack his base and gave him a friendly 'gg' back. He responded by pausing the game without a word and I asked why he paused he did not respond. I unpaused it and continue to kill him.
