Got the Battle for Macragge box set today. Some very nice terrain bits in there, if I may say so...

I was wondering if anybody's used it? Rather interested in seeing what I can do with this...

I've only used the Tyranids. I may paint up the terrain pieces or find something to do with the Marines at a later time.

I hear Macragge is a very, very good bargain - you get a lot of stuff for a relatively modest price. I never got it, as having started when 3rd Edition came out, I have no real need for it.

I may get it...just so I can get a feel for the game, if nothing else.

I'm not too much a fan of the price, myself, considering the simplicity of the minatures (Gaunts aren't so bad if you're going with vanilla termagaunts). $35 on ebay wouldn't be so bad.

Then again, I picked up mine new for like $10.50...

Well, my Honor Guard is almost done. I'll need to glue some arms and shoulderpads on, a bit more flash to clean, some gaps to fill, and a couple accessories and I'll be done with them finally.

I'm still working on the Sergeant's tabard, but the cloth surpasses my expectations even without the extra folds to be added.

That's it for today, for sure.

Aren't the models the crappy clip together ones?

Correct, and yes, 'crappy' is the right term. It works well enough for the Nids, but it makes the Marines fucken vanilla... and the heads being molded into the collars is driving me nuts trying to keep them distinct when I paint...

Anyway! Early results:

Sergeant actually turned out pretty well.

They're looking not bad at all. You're right the sarge is really good, though I'll refrain from guessing since you already told me :D

Looks exactly like Sons of Horus in mkVII armor.

Also, I believe I'm done with sculpting on my Vet Sgt:

Not Sons of Horus, dammit! There's a reason I linkified that Sarge's shoulder plate... (though admittedly it's just nitpicking, but anyway! :P)

Speaking of which, contemplating picking up a box of Guardians next... I do wish I had the Eldar codex though... Ah well, at least I'll have plenty of time to paint my *counts on fingers* squad of Guard, the rest of my Tau, Marines, termagaunts and genestealers... Hmm. Maybe I should just take a break from buying up figures and concentrate on painting for once :P

Well, I had my first draw today. I hadnt realised how ridiculous chaos can be now...

My space marines were nearly outnumbered by chaos...and the sick wargear they get for pitiful costs...

An AV-13 dreadnaught...which ignores crew shaken, stunned and can try to repair imobilised and weapon destroyed results every turn...

Though there were a few dodgy things that he pulled that I notice now I've got the codexes open...demons taking saves for instability wounds for example...which would have tipped the flow of the game. My commander would have got the charge on his raptors rather than the other way around (he was kept locked through my turn thanks to saves on the demons).

Chaos Dreads are totally worthless. Even if it has AV13, it still dies right away to a turn or two of Pfisting, or a couple of las/plas squads and ML devs. It sucks up something like 150 points as well.
What you worry about with chaos are Demonettes (mounted or on foot), the las/plas/icon squads that infiltrate, Daemon Princes, cheapy demonic possessed Preds, Infiltrating havok squads w/icons/tankhunter, Obliterators, and if playing against IW basilisks.
Of course, this is easier said than done, as most chaos armies consist of only the things I named above.
Feel lucky you drew, and played someone who used sucky units. Well built shooty daemon bomb lists are in the top 5 or so of all 40K armies (with the falcon armada and shooty BA).

Most of my problems followed from Escelation and some really sucky reserve rolls.

That and it was a stupidly terrain dense board which meant even with lots of plasma death I was hard pressed to keep his units back, particularly with my main dakka stuck off table till turn 4.

And I just checked...he lied about a second imobilize result killing a tank, it only kills it if it's out of guns. *mutters*

Ah well, once I get some more heavy weapon marines it'll be easier to deal with that sort of thing.

Waaagh! Da Kitchin' Boyz!

Snap, Krackle, Pop, and uh, Shemp.

The bowl, big ladle, and pot need some sanding and the tong-holding hand needs to be repositioned. The Frosting gun needs its tip of frosting glued on, but Salad Shoota seems fine as-is.

I think these two are pretty much finished, except for sanding on the meat fork and frying pan. I'm particularly fond of their guns turned out (the grinda and the egg beata), but it's the chef's hat and strainer that really top off this set.

All in all it was a fun day and a half full of sculpting and learning, and a damn-fine use of a sprue of Orks. Now what the hell would I do with four more?

Rei, Asuka, Shinji, and Gendo? :P

EDIT: Just thinking... I've got a Chaos powerfist. I like the pointy look... would it be kosher to use on a Marine if I filed off the star? I've got a little converting in mind to do with that...

Why not. The Gauntlets of Ultramar are reconsecrated chaos Weapons so...

Oh hell yes it's fine :) I had several left over from my Iron Warrior boxes, removed the star and the exhaust ports, and now they are on my loyalist sgts.

*SLAP*

My two suggestions were to do either the Beagle Boys from DuckTales, or a blackface minstrel trio.

He didn't really take too highly of either suggestion, although he thought the concept of the latter was somewhat amusing.

I thought there was a referee or umpire to oversee these games to prevent that sort of thing. If that's not the case doesn't the game reward people who really really know the Codexes inside out over a relative noob if they can cite to rules and you don't know them? If no umpire is available and someone cites a rule they should have the Codex with them to point it out.

Nominally there's a game master running things, but for the most part it's each player for themselves pretty much. You'll generally only find referees in 'official' games, usually parts of a tournament or a worldwide campaign like Medusa V. As for people using the Codexes to give themselves an advantage over others, very soon they either find themselves schooled by another force, or without other people to play with...
