Would it be possible to give a vessel a "planetary occupation" specialization? For example, if, after conquering a world, if I chose to hold it with a ship specialized for such a function, would it be possible to reduce the total point value need to occupy the system?

OK, I've updated according to rules changes. Anything blatantly wrong that stands out?

Darn, I want to put a hundred and fifty points into external espionage just to piss on the internal security brigade's parade, but it doesn't fit the theme I was going with. Poo.

Can I have a ship that enables me to have lower research costs into new technologies, a la Homeworld?

Heh... two nations claiming to be Americans. This can only end in fire for both groups as one accuses the other of being the imposters and traitors. Almost as bad as the theocracies I would imagine.

We're hammering that out right now, as a matter of fact.

I doubt enough game-time will elapse for significant research to take place, if turns are a month or so long.

I'm still puttering on my OOB, and the new changes are good, I say. Removing tech does streamline things, as 300 points into techs now seems like a lot, but doesn't seem nearly as impressive once ten payment periods have rolled by and your high-tech ships are kicking ass.

The interdictment fields, those are to stop FTL, yes? STL speeds are unaffected by interdictors, and interdictor ships are not fast STL by default, right? I'm trying to go against the grain.

No, there will not be researching in this game. If division is too complex, research is right out. ;)

To clarify further, chances are no. Tech increases shouldn't really be taking place. If you'd like to play a game where tech levels change on a monthly basis, Space Empires 5 is always an option. The last thing I want to see is someone spending 150 points on "uberwin tech #4".

On that subject, tech sharing. No. Maybe if you expend a serious time and resource investment into it, and talk it over with the mods, then maybe, but chances are the answer will be "no". There might be some sort of exception if a nation decides to trade a signature tech with someone else, but that can lead to other complications...like your fancy new communication network having a nasty little backdoor that your supplier can sell to the highest bidder.

How about tech stealing? Assuming it's not huge tech, or nearly as effective as whoever you stole it from.

It would still take considerable time, especially since you wouldn't have the benefit of experienced scientists and engineers from the other side helping you out. It would also be subject to mod approval and judgement.

The one place I approve of this is analysing the code of captured ships from the Microsoft AI and finding some exploitable buffer overflows in the comms handlers. Because you just know they're going to be there. This kind of thing would doubtless take up some of your per-turn build allocation though.

The Tyranids employ covert agents, I don't see why your brand of pure all consuming hunger couldn't do the same.

Oh fuck you Noble Ire, fuck you, you wrote your fluff just to make us natural enemies, didn't you? Especially since I'm really the only one who employs supernatural abilities too (I think one or two other guys mentioned telepathy of some sort). At least it sounds like, quite by accident anyway, Nitram's Enclave was built just to resist your faction.

P.S. The above post may not be entirely serious

Question, does interdiction and EW stack? Could a fleet of smaller ships combine their interdiction/EW capabilites to equal the effects of a single large ship with the exact same bonus to interdiction/EW?

Posted: 2007-06-15 12:46am
by Hotfoot
Interdiction is, as I understand it, manipulating space/time to prevent hyperspace transit out of or into a system. Electronic Warfare is about manipulating data to reveal/conceal the true nature of the battlefield, be it through messing with communications or spoofing targeting software.

They are not related.

As far as giving smaller ships vs. larger ships, I would imagine that larger numbers of smaller ships could cover a wider area with EW/Interdiction, while larger ships could mount more effective devices with somewhat improved individual areas.

Red Leader, remember that anything that gives warships a bonus should be factored into the costs of the ships themselves, not general tech.

The Stellar Dominion Is very much involved in the supernatural arts. Though we probably a less scientific explanation for our Supernatural Abilities.

Yes, my thought was 'that's just like The Thing from the 80s movie - hiding inside/taking the form of other races (prior to eating them) should be quite plausible'.

((Hooray account activated, long time lurker just registered)) Is there room for me to join? I've never done one of these things before but i have my OOB written up. The Chamara kingdom, catgirls in space with nuclear weapons and beamcannon....and the only intelligence service worth a damn so far. if i knew what are valid undertakings for the Int service that'd be good.

Welcome to SD.Net! As of yet, this STGOD hasn't started yet, so you're welcome to join.

That being said, another catgirl nation? What's going on here?

Man, whoever wanted to have the race of protoplasmic blobs that I beat to the punch must feel red faced now. Two, depending on how you count them three, robotic races and three furry races.

This game is going to be awesome. *wipes away tear*
