All I know is that I started in .8, then .801 came out and the save was incompatible.

Also, the import from .8->.801 didn't carry over anything except level and gold (so I had a level 10 character with level 1 stats, fun eah?)

.8->.801 without stats thing was a bug, I'm pretty sure it's been fixed. And that might be true, incompatability might be a problem if certain parts of the game had to be altered to increase stability/fix bugs.

(Note: You can open your character export file in a text editor and alter the stats and import it, making your character's gold, stats, skills (but not level) whatever you want. That could be used to fix any export/import problems, I guess.)
