There are a lot of new avatars, and it will take me a while to get used to the bigger size, but it's all good. I just might try to find a new one to take advantage of the new size limits. Now I won't have to shrink it to the point where all the detail is lost.

Fixed the image. Thanks for the tip.

I can't make this image 100x100 while being less than 6 kb.

Image

Any suggestions? Even the lowest quality jpeg I make of it is still more than 6 kb.

Actually, I found that it should fit very easily as a 100x100 JPEG. With progressive encoding and the default compression value of 15, it was a mere 4,689 bytes, and at a compression value of 9 it was 5,896 bytes. This is a bit confusing to me, maybe you're not reducing the size correctly? The source image you posted is 120x120.

Image

Reduced to 100x100, then reduced the palette down to 136 colors via Optimized Octree, with dithering set to zero. End result is 5,945 bytes.

In general, I found that using PNG format seems more efficent than GIF. For reducing colors, Optimized Octree seems to work better than Optimized Median Cut for a limited file size, although the latter works better when colors instead of bytes are limited. The amount of colors reduced tends to vary from image to image, but 127 seems to be a middling number. Setting the dithering lower reduces file size further, although how it affects the quality of the final result depends. Lowered dithering seems to work better for cel-style images.

If you use JPEG instead, progressive encoding seems to work better and you can fiddle around with the compression ratios.

Thanks, Stan. Yeah, I fiddled around with it some more, and I was able to get it down acceptably. And PNG does work well; I hadn't thought of that.

Yeah, but does M$ support PNG?

Yeah, but does M$ support PNG?
Fuck yeah. Most high-end programs and newer web browsers do.

W00t! About time. I heard IE doesn't like PNGs.

Remember to reduce color depth too.

Ohhh, IE? I'm not really surprised. I don't think Microsoft would add support for new formats when it can invent a few proprietary formats of its own for their personal use.
