Maybe its not that he was gone for a particularly long time. (though presumably they were packed off to the Himalayas straight after he did a runner as per The Sound of Drums) but the simple fact he left them to be with the Doctor at all and not stay with them.

Plus the time difference of the Doctor's recharging in Utopia and re-arrival on Earth in Drums aren't necessarily the same as the time the events of Utopida took. There's an error of plus or minus eighteen months IIRC. So Jack could have been gone longer from Gwen and the team's perspective.

What I wonder is whether the show would be anything with the Doctor's persona? I'm not saying that every Dr.Who episode must be about the Doctor, that argument is already done. What I'm trying to say is whether the show would be interesting without the Doctor's persona, whether these stories could be interesting by themselves?

After all, in one episode we had alien witches that practically abided medevil sorcery and who were defeated by William Shakespear's wordcraft. Then Victorian ghosts under the name of again, aliens. Then a werewolf that defiles all laws of biology. Then we have fucking Satan.

It's like they are throwing mythical creatures againts him with vague justifications. And I haven't seen the pre-2005 series, but was it always like this?

That's like asking if the Thunderbirds would be interesting without the Thunderbirds. It's like they're just pitting those guys up against a whole slew of unrealistic disasters!

The episodes aren't all of the Doctor's life: it varies with the period, but a great deal of off-screen stuff happens. He has access to unlimited downtime if he wanted it.

If your problem is the 'mythical' thing, eat shit and die. Fantasy and scifi are pretty much the same thing already. If you honestly think supertech werewolves are stupid but supertech Victorian moon-lasers aren't, you're a dumbass. Doctor Who is not a 'hard' show, deal with it.

As for the Zixinus' question, The Original Doctor Who Series usually always had the Doctor playing into some mythical setting at least once a year (more in the very begining) I mean he was in Atlantis a few times and he usually got involved with some English myths (Key to Time Season). In reality the New Series episodes that focus on the mythical creatures are some of the best in my opinion

It isn't actually, so bit down on your attitude, would you? I am just surprised they are putting such folklore elements into what is supposed to be a sci-fi show.

Well, the witches and 'satan' were given an SF 'sheen'. After all, Star Trek had the Squire of Gothos and Apollo episodes, and no-one quibbles about them

I really liked Love and Monsters. I think there's plenty of scope for episodes without the Doctor. That was, after all, the whole point of Torchwood, even if they fucked that up.
