Well I spent much of the afternoon busing to and from the city only to find out that Mind Games is out of stock. Damn and blast. I might try again next week.
Now I'd ideally like my character to be a scum from a hive planet who has an enthusiasm for making loud gun noises.

I'm leaning heavily in favor of an ex-Arbites character. Every party needs a designated meat shield, and there's something about the Adeptus Arbites that appeals to me--besides, someone else already called Techpriest.
In terms of background knowledge for WH40K, I've read a lot of the books, including the Eisenhorn and Ravenor ones. Never played the tabletop game, but that doesn't seem to be an issue for these purposes. Played Dawn of War, but that doesn't matter either. My pen & paper RP background is primarily Dungeons & Dragons, but I haven't gotten to play in ages and a lot of the campaigns I was involved in turned into "Monty Haul."
I have played a few RP-enforced, PvP-centric MUDs, so my RP experience isn't entirely "carebear" or loot-fests.

Dark Heresy is a little funky in that good roleplaying can mean offing other party members and wantonly slaughtering NPCs, depending upon context. Death also happens in Dark Heresy. As PCs you get a lot of outs in the form of fate points, but the nature of the combat mechanics means that inevitably your character will end up as little bits of flaming meat scattered across the landscape, in the stomach of a daemon, or batshit fucking insane.
That said, combat is hilarious. Limbs will fly. People will be set on fire and run screaming off cliffs. There will be enough splatter to make Kill Bill look reasonable.

So fate points mean character shield?
Could someone explains what happens with leveling up, distribution of points and the like? Do you have to practice a particular skil (for instance, lock picking)l to gain ability in it, or do you simply allocate points to it, despite that you may have never picked a lock in your life?

If you're gaining new skills, you have to allot time to learn them, though that can be up to the GM's discretion. Obviously, if you've never had to use the skill before but it makes sense they would know it, you might not have to spend time learning it, but if you were, say, learning military ciphers, you'd have to spend a couple hours reading a manual.

Character shields is actually a decent way of explaining fate points. Basically, at char gen you get a number of them. You can spend them so that you can get a variety of effects from rerolls to increasing success to regain some wounds. You get them back whenever you gain more XP however, so they are a renewable resource. Or, in the event that you take damage that would otherwise kill you, you can burn a point, which permanently reduces your max, but you get to live despite horrific injuries. The GM can award additional fate points for good playing though, so its not like you're completely screwed if you have to burn your last one, especially if it was done doing something badass like throwing yourself at a daemon, chainsword whirring and your guts practically hanging out from injury, to buy your comrades time to reload the rocket launcher.

Assuming I can manage to find a copy of the core rulebooks and the like, would you lot be willing to coddle a complete P&P newbie until I learn the ropes?
Not that it matters much, since I can't find the books anywhere

Ajax Voidson, sanctioned psyker with some rather amusing stat rolls reporting for duty.

Freaking sweet! A friend of mine lent me the book, since he said he's not going to be using it for a while till he finds a suitable group! Super happy fun time!

which reminds me I need to make my stat rolls, for my pirate scumbag.
So would an armoured duster jacket qualify as flack or mesh?
that's assuming our techpriest can make armoured dusters for us?
come on, they would look awesome!

Speaking of Tech Priests, Tech-Adept Mercurius Haxtes, servant of the blessed Omnissiah hailing from Scintilla, reporting for duty.

Sanctioned Imperial Psyker Magnus Arterra, reporting for duty

I'd like to get in on this, if no one minds that I've never done an RPG before. I'm waiting on the rulebook.

So, so far we've:
- Matt Huang - Techpriest (Mercurius Haxtes)
- Yos - Pirate/Scum (Eli Rielly)
- Xenophobe3691 - Sanctioned Psyker (Magnus Arterra)
- Jaevric - Arbitrator - no need to be ex, unless you really wish to be, the Inquisition has its own arbitrator units, you just draw your pay from them - Ravenor etc is fine, no tabletop experience required
- White Haven - ?
- Darksider - ? (Not a problem. People will have to cock up quite badly if they're in serious combat any time soon...)
- Cpl Kendall - ?
Looks like quite enough people. I'm thinking I'll get onto writing an intro post tonight, for those that have them, feel free to PM me character 'sheets' or post them here. For people that don't (yet) have the rulebook, feel free to come up with a name and character concept (It would be best to stick with one of the ones in the book: (Adept, Arbitrator, Assassin, Cleric, Guardsman, Psyker, Scum, Tech Priest) and I'll work with that for now.

This might come in handy, if we can find some convenient place to host them.

Darien Roderic, Arbitrator. Not ex if it isn't necessary for these purposes. I'll PM you with my background, Necronlord, unless we're supposed to make it public OOC knowledge.

You're welcome to make it public knowledge, but it's probably best not to. A proper group of PCs should have paranoia about one another, and you're not going to have much prior history (unless any particular players wish to, of course) before the campaign.

Just a quick note: we have a quick reference document for our RP
here, and it was invaluable for our 11-hour combat session when people were rolling and playing for other people who weren't there.
Also, it may not be a good idea to share character sheets, as there are some things that characters wish to keep secret, and IC/OOC separation by players is not entirely effective.

Yeah. I plan to produce a 'public' version from whatever people send me, for combat and so forth.

Cool, that's what I was thinking. Even a really good RPer has a hard time keeping information his character knows about other characters separate from information the player knows, so I was reluctant to put a lot of info about my character up in public.
Besides, Arbitrators aren't known for being chatty, and as products of the Schola Progenium...heh. "And for my eleventh birthday I was given my first shotgun and taught how to field-strip and maintain it. It was the second happiest day of my life. The happiest was the first time they let me shoot some heretic bastard with it."
Welcome to the Imperium of Man, where being a sociopath isn't a mental illness, it's a job description.

Mmm. Why not.
In-character thread. You're all summoned to Malfi. If you're from elsewhere in the sector, you can assume you've been supplied with tickets on a fast (as in, has-a-navigator) transport that's not taken more than a week to get there. You can all get there with no rules or rolls, but feel free to be angry at the labyrinth of
Malfi...

Just remember that i'm only in if I can find copies of the nessescary books before the game starts, which is unlikely at this point since even Amazon is out of stock.

Well, there's likely to be opportunities to join later anyway, even if you're not yet ready.
