I like attacking and defending bases and I have a raging hard-on for stationary weapons of every kind, but I hate building bases and the old "build your tanks and train your troops on the battlefield" thing is outmoded, obsolete and absurd. Bases should only appear in scenario skirmishes or missions with strategic relevance, and they should already be built up (ADEQUATELY) long before you take command.

I'm kinda hoping it's just like in tabletop, where within restrictions you can pile up a single squad with heaps of stuff, since once the squad's gone all that shit is out of action.

Regardless, I'm sure mods will remove whatever hilarious 'balance' limits they implement.

And yeah, DoW should always have been a WiC mod, so here's hoping they actually go somewhere good with this one.

Getting back to the cinematic for a moment, how did the Marines manage to walk by an Eldar who was attempting to hide in nearly open ground next to them? He was covered in, what, ten stalks of some alien space plant right next to their path?

A lot of things bothered me with the cinematic, from the way the Eldar seemed to lazily push their weapons through the Marines armor to just the general stupidity of both sides, uh, not acting like seasoned troops at all. The Marines shouldn't have even gotten close to that Farseer.

Getting to the IGN preview, the description of enemies dropping weapons and armor reminds me of Warcraft 3. That worries me but from the sound of everything else DoW2 will be avoiding that mess of a game. I like the fact that I will be able to interact with terrain, instead of shooting through it like DoW and onward, and telling base-building to go shove it up its ass. I'm sick of building bases. I don't mind making a faux-base in the form of garrisoning buildings and laying mines or something as defense.

You may be thinking of it wrong. Units dropped weapons in Company of Heroes--like a Mortar Team would leave behind a Mortar, and a Machinegun team would leave the Machinegun behind. So you could kill off members of a weapon team but leave the weapon behind. If it did stuff like that then what you'd do is have a machine with a Heavy Bolter get capped, and someone runs up and grabs it off of him to keep it going rather than continually re-purchasing upgrades.

If they really wanted to, they could allow for the construction of fortifications to guard against a siege, minus any troop production whatsoever. Just purely defensive fortifications. After all, the Imperial Fists were known for sieges and defence.

The example expressly mentions squads being non-destroyable; you just shut them down and if them can escape they can refill their ranks. Thus, individuals might die, but nobody can lose their veteran status or sergeant wargear because they can't die.

There better be some semi-permanent death penalty then, other than making it harder to finish the mission.

Did the preview or the interview reveal anything about unit or vehicle caps?

Huh. I thought Astartes were supposed to be, like, really fast?

I'm not sure how they'll handle this in SP, but in MP it'll work fine as it is. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a 'wounds' system or something (of the mentioned CoH-style I STOLE UR GUNZ).

And unit and vehicle caps are the work of the devil - in this case the devil being broken game design and lazy developers. Why no, we can't balance our units! That's why we limit each type so that practical tactics cannot be used and players are forced to fight the way we say so!

If the Astartes were as fast as they should be, they'd have been as fast as the Eldar were in the movie, and the Eldar would have been moving so fast you'd have to be a Space Marine to make sense of their movements. While that might have pleased a few die-hard fluff fans, the rest of the world would find it annoying.

Why? It's generally accepted that Astartes are already genetically enhanced superhumans, so why would the world get annoyed?

Oh dear. Fans get a really strange attitude sometimes. :)

Then why not try the Matrix type of slow motion combat? It's been tried before, and enough people get it, so why not?

Anyway, this game is presenting me with a quandary. I want to play it, but I don't want to get Vista. Goddammit.

My gripe remains - the Orkz are all clones of each other rather then individuals with distinct faces. Clones can work with Marines or Eldar or anyone in full armor because armor looks more or less the same. Individuals don't.

It requires Vista?

I'm pretty sure it does infact have DX9 support, however it's optimized for DX10, which if they are actually telling the truth means it will be slower in dx9 mode.

They'd have to be insane to make it Vista-only. While THQ is a part of the "Games for Windows" program, it'll be years before games start requiring DX10.

I suspect they've got more important things to be doing at this stage of development than making sure every Ork is a beautiful and unique snowflake. Once everything's nailed together and working, they can add polish like individual model features.

Aye. I'm pretty sure all ASMs are still beakies, too.

SO the community and forums went live, which is nifty. Developers and leaking hints, people are pooling clips from cons and transcripts, and it has given rise to an interesting theory.

Tyranids are race 4. However, it isn't because people wanted the bugs. It is because they are gonna use that extra time and extra room in an expansion pack to make Chaos into 4 separate races, broken down by chaos god, rather then one monolithic block that is a clone of the SM like they were in DoW1. Which is awesome on so many different levels. I can build a Nurgle army or field Noise marines? Yes. I get 4 races in the XP instead of 1 or 2? Oh god yes. If this is true it will be great beyond measure.
