OpenOffice Writer is pretty good, but for raw text editing I've grown rather fond of kwrite over kedit.

I bought a student version of Office back in 1996. I forget what the version before Office 97 was called.jegs2 wrote:Has anyone paid for the full MS Office?Pu-239 wrote:I try to use open-source alternatives when I can. Anyways all the pirated stuff I have is >5 years old, and Doom is 10 years old and hardly anyone buys it anymore, so I think pirating that is OK. The only exception is M$ Office, which I don't use anyways

Office 95. And before that I think it was 6.0.TrailerParkJawa wrote:I bought a student version of Office back in 1996. I forget what the version before Office 97 was called.

Then I must have 6.0 cause I know it is not Office 95. It is not on a CD so there are like 40 3.5" floppies or some ridiculus number like that.Crayz9000 wrote:Office 95. Er, I don't know what Sonique is, but I can have Media Player, IE, AIM, and ICQ going simultaneously and Win2k is still responsive for me.By the way, does anybody know WHY Microsoft feels that it's necessary for a WORD PROCESSOR to consume so many system resources it's nearly impossible to run AIM, Opera, and Sonique in the background without have a 1 minute load time for a 100k file?
Sounds to me like your computer just sucks. If it's really a problem, just go to Wordpad; it's suitable for nearly all word-processing needs.

I purchace software, as I have always preferred the original copy to a cracked download, and a company deserves to be compensated for its work.
As to OS's, I would buy MS OS's if they charged a reasonable price, they dont charge a reasonable price, its unreliable {I have to maintain the damn stuff, so I know} so they get what they deserve for charging more than the average weekly take home pay for a dodgy product.
Having said that, I would never pay for a cracked programme, or sell pirated softeware, thats downright immoral.

Ugh.
There's a graphical front-end called Lyx which also runs on Cygwin.
As for text editing, Emacs.
Unfortunately, I can't seem to find any console-mode text editor that wraps lines without inserting newlines except for vi (ugh) and emacs, though emacs messes it up and treets it as one long line, ie moving arrow down moves down a whole paragraph.

I try to buy stuff I use...that said, I can't afford Photoshop and the only reason I own Form?Z is that I won it. The cheap edition is $1500 (the version I won is $2390), and the demo is save-disabled, so you need to guess if it works for you.
I buy every version of the Mac OS, and I'll be purchasing Keynote.
I think that using a serial number for a shareware app you'll only use once isn't exactly nice to the author, but...
Little tiny apps that don't do very much (i.e. haxies for Mac OS X) shouldn't cost more than $5. It's not worth it over that cost.
On MP3s, I'd rather send the artist money than buy the CD. The recording company didn't do that much...
I'd say my equation is if it's not M$ and it's useful and I can afford it then I'll buy it. That said, I don't use any M$ stuff...

Well, I limit the use of pirate software by not using or installing things I dont need. All apps i run i either pay for them or are shareware. I do install some pirate games now and then, if they are good enugh then i buy them. I've payed for every game i actually play. Now, about MS stuff, well, i payed the full price for Windows 3.1 and what i think was the very first Office for Windows, back in 1993 or 1994, each came in a huge box with about 50 disks each. I think MS should be gratefull that i still use it's products after I payed for that stuff and that I deserve all the free upgrades i want, so i have not payed for anything else ever since, im now using everything XP pro .
One day my computer's cpu fan kicked the bucket, I didn't have a replacement and had a ton of work to do. So I opened the case and would periodically wack the fan to get it spinning....
Anyhow this is what I found out:
Word running on idle generates more heat (CPU=red hot) than most programs running on full tilt (mainly because the others alternate heavy/low usage) including AutoCAD.... that's just sad.

Well MS and a lot of other software companies price gouge by making the upgrade cost 50-75% of the full version, for like a feature increase of 15-25%.
Also, my memory is fuzzy, but if you look closely at the Windows EULA, if you have an upgrade version, you cannot simultaneously run the previous version. That means no dual booting Windows 98 and 2K if you upgraded instead of bought the full version.
