Why not? I don't see any way they can't fuck over the EU even more at this point.

An extended synopsis of
Outcast has been posted on the
main site:
After violent civil war, and the devastation wrought by the now-fallen Darth Caedus, the Galactic Alliance is in crisis -- and in need. From all corners, politicians, power brokers, and military leaders converge on Coruscant for a crucial summit to restore order, negotiate differences, and determine the future of their unified worlds. But even more critical, and far more uncertain, is the future of the Jedi.
In a shocking move, Chief of State Natasi Daala orders the arrest of Luke Skywalker for failing to prevent Jacen Solo's turn to the dark side and subsequent reign of terror as a Sith Lord. But it's only the first blow in an anti-Jedi backlash fueled by a hostile government and suspicious public. When Jedi Knight Valin Horn, scion of a politically influential family, suffers a mysterious psychotic break and becomes a dangerous fugitive, the Jedi become the target of a media-driven witch-hunt. Facing conviction on the damning charges, Luke has only one choice. He must strike a bargain with the calculating Daala: his freedom in exchange for his exile -- from Coruscant and from the Jedi Order.
Now, though forbidden to intervene in Jedi affairs, Luke is determined to keep grim history from being repeated. With his son, Ben, at his side, Luke sets out to unravel the shocking truth behind Jacen Solo's corruption and downfall. But the secrets he uncovers among the enigmatic Force mystics of the distant world Dorin may bring his quest -- and life as he knows it -- to a sudden end. And all the while, another Jedi Knight, consumed by the same madness as Valin Horn, is headed for Coruscant on a fearsome mission that could doom the Jedi Order . . . and devastate the entire galaxy.

The Horn family is influential?
And tell me that Daala isn;t motivated by the well publicized fact that Luke killed her lover Tarkin some 30-40 years prior.

So what else is new?
Seriously, why do we need to keep having these big galaxy-shattering events every five years (in-universe) or so? It just makes the ending of
Return of the Jedi into a horrible joke: yeah they beat the Empire. Enjoy your unrelenting string of major crises for the next 30 years, suckers! Who needs stability?
Are they just that incapable of coming up with a compelling story that doesn't have to Threaten Everything Our Heroes Have Fought For(TM)?

I seem to recall Corran's adopted grandfather was supposed to be pretty influential in
I,Jedi He'd sent people bunches of his flowers and 'express an opinion' to them.
I think it was just becuase He was a CorSec High flyer in his day and knew about a lot of skeletons and closets.

If they were so influential then how is it that we hear hardly anything of them. The Horn family as we know it is made up of Corran Horn, who was a pariah after his failure to save Ithor, his Jedi Children, and Mirax Terrik, who has never been shown to weild any kind of influence. I didn't think Hackpole was writing for this series, there's no need for his Gary Stu to be a central character.
And no matter how prominent they may be I would think that the name SKYWALKER would hold a little more leverage.

Quite True. I was pointing out that the Horn family has been established as 'influential' before now, even if its utterly implausible for it to be at the current time. What with Corran joining the rebellion back when Corellia was firmly pro Empire, and all the upheavals since then.

Bargain? With the psychotic bitch?
Dice her into four or five pieces maybe, but.....
This shit is only good if you want to raise your blood pressure, and yelling at a book or computer screen is undignified at best

Hey that's not a horrible idea that could salvage this mess, have the big threat be Daala leading one last cadre of ex-Imperials just out for revenge on Luke Skywalker and nothing else. They don't want to restore the Empire, because they have power in the current structure, they don't want to eradicate the whole Jedi Order, because the Jedi serve their government technically already. It's a plot against Luke and his closest friends and relatives. Part of the story could even be Daala hiring Boba Fett and Luke carving him and his Mandos up with relative ease with the Force.
Shortly afterwards, should a character with suitable experience even exist, Luke could then go into semi-retirement and have a role like what Yoda had at the old Jedi Temple.
Fuck! That took two minutes to come up with and it's already something much more preferable than what they are selling.

Well personally I've decided the best way to deal with this is to simply regard everything from the Yuuzhan Vong war onwards, plus all of the bad fanfic written by traviss, to be part of the Infinities brand, nothing more than a series of "what if....."s that never actually happened.

That's how I handle things too, although I do include the NJO in my personal canon. I don't really like it, but at least it was an attempt to revitalize the EU from the rut it fell into instead of a simple moneymaker, and I find TUF to be an excellent closure to the series.

You are deluding the fuck out of yourself if you think that George Lucas gives two fucks about anything that happens outside of his little projects. As long as things are making money, he'll let whatever happen. If Star Wars suddenly stopped selling, he might step in, but of course that doesn't mean shit either. It's not like GL is some magician who will make things perfect: look at the prequel trilogy. The best one of them is the one where he had lots of outside influences tempering his ideas and his crazy tangents. But as far as crap coming out of his empire, don't hold your breath for it changing.

I don't mean to say that I think Lucas is infallible. And obviously he doesn't care that much about EU quality control. Hence my use of the word "persuaded".
What I'm talking about is something like a concerted campaign to get Lucas to fire people like Travis and kick their junk from cannon. Like the letter campaign that supposedly bought Star Trek another season, but in reverse.

I wish that I could agree that that would make any difference, but by this point, there's just too much crap in the EU to make any sort of campaign to excise certain portions feasible. I've historically been an inclusionist, but I'm slowly shifting towards the stance that the universe needs to be overhauled completely. Perhaps existing material could be evaluated by a group of "experts" to be included in the "new" EU, but then you'd run into all sorts of problems, like who to have in the group choosing what to reinstate, the fact that suddenly much of the existing stuff would be pointless (like it isn't already), etc. Really the only hope I have for the EU is a slow policy shift, and who knows if that will happen, when, and how long it would last.

Yes, I agree that the EU is so riddled with errors and stupidity that a careful pruning won't do. I'm afraid a slash and burn aproach is needed. The list of material remaining would ideally be less than the material cut, that's for sure.
The problem with a gradual shift in policy is that their will always be new errors popping up, piling on to the existing problem. It just becomes too unwieldy. I think it has to be one swift stroke. But yes, I don't see it happening.

Who cares about writing intelligently and true to the movie characters, when you can dust off an old EU character for the fanwank inclusionist connection while setting up your next big nine-part saga that will change the SW galaxy forever?

*Yawn* What else is new? As has been pointed out, the EU just makes ROTJ meaningless, and the Rebellion a total failure.

The question is, will there be hot lesbian sex including Daala. Or maybe threesomes. Though, they killed Mara off, so it's no good.
*covers head in hands*
I can't believe that's what the SW "continuity" devolved into ~30 years after.

Dude, Daala is in her sixties or seventies by this point.
No sex involving her could possibly be described as "hot"

Seriously though, that's something that scares the shit out of me about any of karen Traviss' future books.
I seriously think that she's got a hard-on for the mandalorians, so i'm having fucking nightmares about descriptive scenes of 70 year old Boba Fett or 80 year old Kal Skirata "gettin' down" as it were.
There won't be enough brain bleach to wipe that mental image away.

It really does help if you view traviss' potential future writings as bad fanfic that belongs in the Infinities category.
Seriously stop labelling this silly cunt as an author, she most certainly is nothing of the kind, a third rate fanfic writer writing idiotic slashfic with delusions of adequacy.
On a good day.
