Let's see you lot top this:

E. T. for the Atari 2600.

I used to play that a lot back in the day (and I mean on a real Atari 2600 console, not an emulator). I know, it's been rated the worst game in history by many, but IMHO they just didn't bother -or didn't have the minimum attention span and intellectual capacity- to understand the game's simple-yet-not-evident dynamics.

I must say I found it quite amusing, until after the third time or so you completed the "mission", then I remember it became ridiculously difficult.

If I cpuld get an original working Atari 2600 again, along with 10 cartridges of my choosing, ET would undoubtedly be one of them.

Hard to say what was worse, ET or the Atari 2600 Raiders of the Lost Ark.

At least I never bought the damn thing, it was fortunate at the time that the local video rental store also rented Atari VCS cartridges.

thejester, you talk about Blazing Angels, do you mean the first game or the second, as I don't remember there being multiplayer in the first. You're right that the story is ridiculous, but the games are just basic, no nonsense brainless fun. Some of the 'wonder weapons' in the second game are downright silly though.

Playing on 360/PS3 there was split-screen. I do it a slight injustice though; there were two dimensions to multiplayer combat. You only got to see who could turn harder once you made the initial pass - if you could smoke your opponent then, it was all good. As you can imagine, this lead to minutes of fun before we both got sick of the sheer stupidity,

Ah right, its the 360 versions of both games I have. BA2 has a functional online component but there are damned few servers and all of them are the team deathmatch variant, I wouldn't mind playing some of the others.

The games are brainless shooters, but I think they aren't too bad looking, the music used ingame adds to the atmosphere, and all in all they are fun. However, there's no way i'd call them sims. :) IL-2 Sturmovik they aren't. :)

Arena. The Elder Scrolls... ONE.

It came out in... 1994? Bah.

I think there is.. about one reason I play it. Twinking. The treasure!

See.. each treasure pile... it can have anything except Leather or Chain armor. It always has some gold, as high as 140ish as low as 1 lulz, and a mix of weapons, armor, and magical items. Magical items come in 2 flavors; marks, bracers, crystals and rings that have stored charges of spells such as Heal, Light, Shield, Levitate, Fireball, Lifesteal, Passwall, Invisibility, Wizard Lock, Open, Wizard's Fire, Purification (Esuna, basically). The other type are; belts, bracelets, torcs and amulets... which either increase your Armor Class, or increase your stats.
Armor comes in several flavors: Leather (+3 armor.. I think? Never actually wore this!), Chain (better; +6), and Plate (awesome; +9.) Plate can be of different material; Elven (+1), Dwarven (+2), Mithril +3, Adamantium +4, Ebony +5. Steel, iron and silver are available, but aside from iron being "-1" and silver doing double damage to Vampires, these three metals aren't that important. Plate can ALSO be enchanted.

Yes, this means plate can be Ebony, giving a total of 14 to armor class, and either increase a stat by 10, or hold charges of a spell. Insane. I'm pretty sure Armor doesn't have.. offensive, damage-dealing, spell charges.

Any kind of weapon can be found in treasure. Also, unlike armor, *all* weapons can be of a special material, or magical. Weapon enchantments, besides +10 to a stat, include spells such as Resist Shock, Levitate, Fireball, Resist Shock, Resist Shock, Fire Dart, Lifesteal, Lightning, Wizard's Fire, Passwall. Did I mention weapons can make you resistant to shock?

Longswords, however, are the best kind of weapon. They're 1-handed weapons, so you can use a shield... but what's good about them, is the fact that they show up more often than other weapons. Furthermore, you are more likely to get a special-material or enchanted, or BOTH, longsword, than you are to get a normal longsword. Any treasure you pick up has like... a 10% chance to have a Longsword in it. And quite frankly I don't think I've ever found *enchanted weapons that weren't longswords. Occasionally I found something like a silver saber, but no Ebony Staffs or Battleaxes or Claymores.. Longswords are the best, hands down.

The best thing about treasure? Any treasure can have any kind of enchanted/special material item... Which means you can pick up an Ebony Longsword of +10 Strength, +5 bracelets, amulets, torcs, +5 plate armor of +10 Endurance... in the starter dungeon. The starter dungeon is small and has like 10 treasure piles in it. If you're willing to save your game before clicking on the loot, you can reload until you get whatever items you want.

Emperor of the Fading Suns. A fun premise and had some good ideas but not well balanced between space and ground, weird AI, and the whole game ground to a halt about half way through the game. Loved the opening sequence into the universe.

It was also quite funny that if you broke into a house in one of the cities you could come upon mid level monsters like Minotaurs. The city guard are pissed at me for breaking and entering, but they've not got any issues about a freaking dangerous monster inside the city walls. :)

UFO: Aftershock.

Yeah, it had all the problems of X-COM and didn't bother fixing any of them. Yeah, I never finished it because it became horribly repetitive and dull with a gazillion missions before the next Plot Point lazily waltzed into the solar system. Yeah, the tactical combat wasn't tactical at all.

But you could blow the FUCK out of stupid Wartok aliens with RPG-7s and heavy machine guns. Plus, the armors looked badass (you just needed to swap the retarded blue skin for proper camo)

I have always liked Vampire Rain for the 360. It’s kind of like Splinter Cell with vampires, and if you are spotted they will kill you in seconds. It is very hard if you try to fight through each level but once you get past the learning curve it becomes simplistic. I like to play it as a party game with people that have no clue what they are doing. The AI isn't very smart but is godlike when it finds you. Most of the weapons available to you are worthless or take two clips to kill a single vampire. There is a knife in the game that kills them instantly but it has limited ammunition. If they spot you it is pretty much over because they will kill you in two hits. Its worth it you have the patience.

Eh? Arena had lycanthropy...? I was never aware of this. Tell me more?

Also, I did download that game and, a while back... months ago, I posted about an issue on the Elder Scrolls forum boards.

Y'see, I'm the guy that had a character that mysteriously lost somewhere around 20, 25 points of Strength... for no particular reason. I was a level 11 warrior, had gotten the Oghma Infinimum--an artifact that gives you 50 stat points--one or twice, and in the pre-2nd Staff Piece dungeon.

I had 80 Strength, unmodified by magic (although I do have a +20 bracelet or torc, whichever one it is that gives +20). I am very close to leveling up. When I hit level 12, I lose 5 strength! What the fuck? The really strange thing is that I only noticed this in the dungeon for the THIRD (or is it the actual dungeon for the 2nd staff piece?) Staff Piece... when my strength had dropped by like 20 more points!! I only caught the "level up = lose 5 Strength" because I was lucky enough to have not over-written a save file! (I was still level 12 in the next dungeon... In Arena, you have to complete a staff. It has 8 pieces. Each piece is in a dungeon. To get to the dungeon, you have to clear a dungeon so that the Mages Guild/Queen/Order of the Knights Templar Who Say Ni But Not It, Dammit! give you the map to where the actual goddam staff piece is. Oi.) So all I know is that I lose 5 Strength upon leveling up, and hours of playing later, I notice I lose about 20 more strength...

Gah. Anyway. What races and classes in Arena did you guys play? I usually played Knights. I liked the Plate Armor. And Dark Elf race; mostly because it was traditional as my first character in 1994 was a Dark Elf, and I didn't have too much trouble surviving as a Dark Elf.... Although Redguard Knight, or Warrior, would probably be best race combo if I want to melee.

Lately I'm playing a High Elf Battlemage. I'm only using one spell; Shield. Meh, oh well.. it's one of the more cheesier spells so it works! Anybody know if Spellsword would be better than Battlemage? Or if another race would be better than High Elf?

Also, does it piss off anybody else that when you level up, the hit points you gain are.. completely random! And the stat increases you get are... also completely random! I mean, seriously... You can get 3 stat points, or 6! You can get 3 hit points, or 18! It's even so more worrisome at character creation! You can have 3 stats at 60, rest at 50mark, and only one crappy one... (this is an above-average start, AFAIK).. or you can get 2 high-30s, one high 50, and rest in the 40s. And 26 hit points.

Hint: starting hit points are 25, + hit-die for CLASS + con modifier (if you have Endurance of 60 or so, you get +1ish hit point per level. It is NOT retroactive by stat increases! Which is why my Battlemage has an End of 94 at level 8, and an INT [int x 1.5 spellpoints] in the high-50s.)

Class hit die can be as crappy as d10 or so, and as awesomesauce as d30 for the Barbarian. Another odd thing is that the Battlemage class should have d18 hit points, but the max I've been able to get (adjusting for con mod) is about 14 per level...

As excited as I am, and as glad as I am that I can "cheat" the system by milking the most out of the treasure piles, it is very irritating to me that I have to Save, Reload SO MANY TIMES in order to "not suck" at character creation and level-ups. In that, Arena is a bit too true to the pen&paper RPG methods of character creation and leveling up...

I'm digging on Bladestorm. It's prettyboy 100 years war on crack, it's got an unnecesarily broken UI, poorly planned character progression and unbalanced units. It's got almost no AI and suffers from Dynasty Warriors 'lol I killed ur BOSS' problems. It's either horribly easy or essentially impossibly hard.

But it's open, the battlefields are huge and places are captured and lost when you're nowhere near them, the war flows in fairly dynamic ways, and the ideas behind the units were cool. If only the interface was better and the progression was less random.

I don't know if I would call Left 4 Dead a bad game. It has flaws I may have overlooked in the past before my Starkification. The melee is totally bonkers, there is a distinct lack of rocket launchers, and it is effectively yet another Source mod.

However, a part of me likes to shoot zombies, and Left 4 Dead lets me tap into this vein of my psyche in a way I find most pleasing.

They better fix that fucking melee.

It was a massively-hyped FPS that was supposed to revolutionize gaming, with an obnoxious ad campaign and Big Promises. Until release day, when people discovered it was an ugly, broken, not-very-fun bog-standard Quake clone.
