Yeah, but the UK has among the most ridiculous data security and privacy protection laws in existence compared to the rest of Europe, for example Germany.Prometheus Unbound wrote:My school, back in 1994, introduced a system where we had to swipe electronic cards through data readers at least 3 times a day (arrival, leaving at lunch and coming back after lunch) to monitor attendance. A decision must be made in the life of every nation at the very moment when the grasp of the enemy is at its throat. Then, it seems that the only way to survive is to use the means of the enemy, to rest survival upon what is expedient, to look the other way. Well, the answer to that is 'survival as what'? A country isn't a rock. It's not an extension of one's self. It's what it stands for. It's what it stands for when standing for something is the most difficult! - Chief Judge Haywood

Nothing like that on my course (Cardiff, UK)
heck there was one professor who used to film his lectures and stream them for our later consumption.
all of our notes are available online though, and presumably they can track that easily enough.

I find this slightly amusing given recent scandals regarding data theft in UK.Thanas wrote:Yeah, but the UK has among the most ridiculous data security and privacy protection laws in existence compared to the rest of Europe, for example Germany.Prometheus Unbound wrote:My school, back in 1994, introduced a system where we had to swipe electronic cards through data readers at least 3 times a day (arrival, leaving at lunch and coming back after lunch) to monitor attendance. ^Why?
Oh, and please strike the "among" from my previous sentence. It has no place there.

I realize that my history degree is one of those 'goddamn hippy liberal arts' degrees, but I routinely missed entire weeks of lecture with little to no impact on my grade. I'd normally attend classes that interested me, or for my upper-division requirements, but the bullshit fill-in-the-schedule or intro classes...well, I had better things to do, like watching paint dry. A fair number of my classes I attended half a dozen times or less over the course of the semester, basically on the given test/quiz days, and did just fine.

I like how my taxation phrased it. "You could probably pass the class without attending lecture if you read the textbook and study" but he tries to talk about social issues behind taxes in class that is a little less dry than the textbook. Its always more effective if you can trick the students into thinking attending class would benefit them.
