In WW2 an American ship that was carrying mustard gas exploded during an attack. Here is a bried description of what happened afterward. It gives a little insight as to what could happen if this story was true.

Among the ships sunk when German JU-88 bombers attacked the port of Bari on the night of 2 December 1943 was John Harvey, which was carrying mustard gas intended for use in retaliation by the Allies if German forces initiated gas warfare. Most of the released gas was carried out to sea by an offshore breeze, but many military and civilian personnel were temporarily incapacitated or killed by undetermined amounts of the gas which were held in solution in oil that was floating on the water. Of the more than 800 casualties hospitalized after the raid, 628 suffered from mustard gas exposure. Sixty-nine deaths were attributed in whole or in part to this cause.

Medical officers and aidmen treating the casualties were unaware of the presence of the gas, which was diluted sufficiently to be detected by odor. In the belief that casualties covered with oil but showing no physical damage were suffering from exposure and immersion, they were wrapped in blankets, still in their oil-soaked clothing, given hot tea, and left as they were for twelve to twenty-four hours while the more urgent blast injuries and surgical cases were treated.

Those with the energy and will to clean the oil from their own bodies suffered no serious damage, but the remainder suffered varying degrees of mustard burns. Eyes began to burn about 6 hours after exposure, and were so badly swollen in 24 hours that many of the patients thought themselves blind. The first deaths occurred without warning 18 hours after exposure.

About 90 percent of the gas casualties were American, the bulk of them merchant seamen. Since no U.S. hospital facilities were yet available in Bari - equipment for all but one of the U.S. hospitals scheduled for the area were destroyed in the bombing - casualties were hospitalized in British installations. Of the Army): 350-351.]

I never ever ever never ever get tired of hearing this template- it just sounds so final.

"And then [blank] had them all shot"

I love it.

Oh, and this story is *sniff* *sniff* bullshit fodder for Fox News.

Forced boarding action at night by Navy SEALS or the British equivilant. They could insert from a small rubber craft, from helecopter, of from a high altitude jump. Or one of the suppling ships could be taken over, and used as a Trojan Horse.

If you don't won't to take it over, but still would like to know if WMD are on board, then you could send a team of seals underwater to covertly attach some kind of sensor on the hull that would pick up possible signs of contraband.

Anyone find it strange that all these sources are covering this story, but it's not on mainstream American news (CNN, Fox News, MSNBC)? And if it's true, why isn't Bush making use of this? It would be a pretty strong argument against Iraq.

Probably cause it is not true. Ships with WMD's are a better "smoking gun" than the pictures of camps in norther Iraq, imo.

That wont come close to working. No fuel air bomb comes even close to the needed power. The only thing that would be totally effective would be to vaprioze the ship by exploding a nuke very close too it so its within the fireball. Only that would spread a lot of radioactivity around.

Beyound that, it might be possibul to storm it in time, or try to ram it ashore and hope it goes down in shallow enough water for quick salvage.

What? I'll try and find the sources on it...

If nothing else it would prove that if the Russians couldn't fucking do it, how the hell could the Iraqis?

AFAIK, the "supernuke on a ship" is just another BS story. The Soviets wanted to dominate the postnuclear war...not make it uninhabitable.

ok so whos good for moving to mars?

btw, I say nuke the ships NOW. If they have WMD on board, nuking them would take care of it. Better to do that then anything else. Iraq will never know what happened to them. An airburst of a few megatons right over the ships would vape them and dump enough radiation on them to kill anything withing a mile.

Aside from that, you can't just scale nukes to infinity, even if you have the material (which I doubt the Russians did).

I never said anything about it being one huge nuke, what it was (in planning at least) was a ship carrying a few big nukes and a whole bunch of dirty shit.

That's what I've heard as well. Problem is you can't realistically set off several nukes at once so close together, one is going to kill the others and be the only to explode fully. The Soviets knew this like everyone else, and the whole thing is bull.

Well in theory you can. In practice all the weight of uranium will just squash whatever material is on the bottom of the bomb if nothing else.
