Re: 'Hardcore' backlash against Move/Kinect
The reason for the anti-movement gaming system backlash is simple -
Computer Game skills are no longer 'elite' or precise.
I have known people that literally prided themselves on spending dozens of hours getting a buttom move or combo down 'perfectly' for when they play, to the point they could do entire levels of a 3D shooter game on muscle memory.
And worse yet, they thought it made them active.
Now, in order to be 'elite' at a game, you have to actually do something. If you want to play 'WII Bowling', for example, you pretty much have to bowl (minus the actual weight of the ball)
In short, video games have become something that requires real effort', not fake 'I'm sitting on my ass' effort.

I've been asked why I still follow a few of the people I know on Facebook with 'interesting political habits and view points'.
It's so when they comment on or approve of something, I know what pages to block/what not to vote for.

But Solauren, that doesn't explain why 'active movement' music games like Rock Band are popular even amongst the "hardcore" crowd.

Obviously, because a) they aren't very active outside drums and b) they involve another 'skill' that they feel can separate them from 'normal people'.
Frankly the idea that plastic guitars is 'active' is ridiculous. It's a funny-shaped controller, that's all, and its certainly true that the genre appeals to non-gamers as well.

Consoles dying pretty much doesn't matter unless you're a total fanboy, though. You just end up playing your games on a new machine that has a different logo on the box and probably fancier kit inside. A general move away from traditional games to Kinect-type-stuff would be a rather more drastic change.General Zod wrote:Only because they're idiots. I can sort of understand why someone who's heavily into gaming would feel that way. It's pretty obvious from Wii sales that there's a huge market for this sort of stuff if people can make it work. Businesses aren't going to be so quick to spend huge amounts making games to the tastes of said 'hardcore' gamers when they can spend the same (or less) on putting out games for a larger market that probably won't be as much hassle to deal with.

I'm not sure it's significantly more drastic than going from cartridge to CD.Crazy_Vasey wrote:A general move away from traditional games to Kinect-type-stuff would be a rather more drastic change.

Re: 'Hardcore' backlash against Move/Kinect
I wasn't a console gamer back then - I could only afford the one machine and that had to be a PC for school - so I didn't get to experience that switch. Closest I can claim was going from my Amiga 500+ to a PC. That was a big improvement but it was more evolutionary than anything else.
Re: 'Hardcore' backlash against Move/Kinect
Personally, I see the Kinect/Move as being basically the same sort of gimmick as the recent obsession with 3D in movies (ie something to avoid). If other people view it in the same way, I could see why they might worry that before long every game's going to try shoehorning in some stupid motion-control gimmick.
Yeah, motion control could be great if done right in a more "hardcore" game, but what are the chances of that happening? So far as I know, Nintendo still hasn't produced even a mildly good swordfighting game like everyone wanted/expected for the Wii. Still, they've only been out for, what, a month?
Then again, since this "hardcore" crowd seems to think games like MW2/Black Ops are good, maybe it is better if they're marginalized.

Re: 'Hardcore' backlash against Move/Kinect
The way the Wii worked meant it wasn't capable of running a swordfighting simulator until the WiiMotion Plus was released. By the same token they never released a decent shooter even though Red Steel demonstrated it was possible.
