It should be pointed out that the primary purpose of the Missile Boat was to specifically counter the TIE Defender, in case any fell into the wrong hands. Against most other craft, the Missile Boat is not flexible enough to survive.

Ignoring the stupid 2.5km range (Sidewinders are 16-24) they can be used for BVR slashing. Fire missles, zoom out, rince and repeat. A multi-target system from the T/D would work great. Nothing can outrun a SLAM MB.

My personal preference?
The A-Wing. You don't have to be crazy to fly one, but it helps.
All the thing is is engines with a cockpit and laser cannons put on as an afterthought.

Some of the EU craft are pretty stupid(the Uber X-Wing, the (random letter)-wing etc etc etc)
Appearance-wise? Y-wing, followed by the X-wing. For sheer speed, the TIE interceptor. Firepower? The B-wing(when you absolutley positively have to kill every craft in the system, accept no substitutes)
The A-wing? Bleah. TIE fighters? Dinky. The N-1 just blows.

Robert Treder wrote:phongn wrote:Well, given decent missiles (which SW has) and good speed (using SLAMs), boom and zoom tactics can work quite well
Chuck some missiles at the Defender then run before it can catch up.
Especially in concert with the starfighter-scale tractor beam. Hold the T/D down with the tractor, lob a few pairs of advanced missiles, watch it go boom.
That said, I still like the TIE Interceptor and the A-wing.
Uh... I think the only fighter with a tractor beam is the Triple Ion Engine DEFENDER!!!!!
Comes equipped with Early warning systems for missile locks, so can jink to dodge/fry missiles.
And a hyperdrive, shields, maneuverability, unfortunately huge (but mostly nonvital) target area, 4 laser cannons, 2 ion cannons, and two missile ports.
Also, name one other fighter craft (apart from the Tie clutch Ugly) that has been PROVEN to shoot down a missile (Wedge with Ion Cannon(!) in Isard's Revenge)!!!
"Disclamer: Using a Tie Defender is not everything: Any craft can defeat any other, as long as there is a large enough skill difference."
Anyway, highly skilled Tie Defenders would still beat highly skilled Missile Boats, on a one-on one, or squadron on squadron: Why? Trips can shoot down missiles with ease, and they know that they have incoming due to the early warning system.

The Missile Boat can be equipped with a beam system, like it or not.
I know that in-game mechanics are inadmissable, but I don't think you're going to find many people who believe that no fighter other than the TIE/D possesses the ability to recognize when they're being targeted by missiles. Hell, real-life fighters can do this.

I write off targeting and range and all of that from the games as game mechanics bullshit.

If the pathetic TIE Clutch can do it, it is quite certain other fighters can too.
The TIE Interceptor in The Krytos Trap

All fighters have an early warning system.
Trips ability to shoot down torpedoes is will documented by other ships and is hardly going to be a Trip speciality.
Stop wanking, please.

My favorite is the X-Wing. It's not the fastest, most powerful, or best by a long shot...but it's just such a classic

I personally like TIE defenders and skipray Blastboats.

The Y-Wing. It's cool looking at it head-on.
And which one is the best?
TIE-Defender.

True. I am not saying that trips have a monopoly on shooting missiles down, but some craft with heavier firepower cannot maneuver fast enough to do so: Y-wing (Hell - they can't even dodge far enough) and possibly B-wings. Tie Defenders have most of that firepower (except torp/missile loadout in the game) and beat both with lasers and ion.
Darth Negation wrote:Anyway, highly skilled Tie Defenders would still beat highly skilled Missile Boats, on a one-on one, or squadron on squadron: Why? Trips can shoot down missiles with ease, and they know that they have incoming due to the early warning system.

Not true for EU (though in the game, they all do, EU rates higher in canon. Hell - Games are not even canon in the first place).
I.e. Isard's Revenge: Battle of Corvis Minor (history records it as a holdout blaster)
"He tried to get a lock on the third, but it bounced around too much as well.
Either they have early warning systems, or they're just being cautious."
Either they have Early warning systems, which means that these are special, or they're just being cautious (so if they had early warning systems, they must have taken them out to stop the incessant bleeping).
Trips ability to shoot down torpedoes is will documented by other ships and is hardly going to be a Trip speciality.
True. See above, please.

Though my favourite would be the V-38 (if it counts). It looks so cool!
(esp. with cloak engaged).

All Alliance Starfighters have missile lock warning systems. IIRC only Veteran Tie pilots get squints equiped with missile lock. I'll divert your attention to the battle of Boreallis(sp). The Ties they fight there have missile lock and Corran Horn surmised that only the elite Ties of the empire have Missile Lock warning.

My subjective read on the fighters:
Best:
Canon: Depends on the mission:
ground/capship strafing: X-Wing, dogfighting: TIE Interceptor (closely followed by the A-W), ground attack: TIE Bomber, capture/policing missions: Y-Wing (only one with Ion cannons).
The one that can do the most damage to capships is of course the TIE/fc
EU: TIE Defender (I don't read NJO nor Vong 'bioship crap')
The T/D can handle all the missions of the above craft; it may not have the flexibility of bay load of the T/B, or guns the size of the X-W, but it is the ultimate multi-role craft.
Favorite:
Canon:
I like the TIE/in almost as much as the TIE Interceptor (and am somewhat partial to the old, T.I.E. starfighter from the DS1).
EU:
If the panels of the T/D had been canted inwards then YES!!!
As it is it is still my favorite non-Canon fighter, although I prefer the Canon TIE Interceptor over it.

I swear my friend has some mental issues, I asked him which he thought was the best ship in SW including the Deat Star and so on, his answer was "The Death Star, but then the X-Wing blows up the Death Star so the X-Wing, but a Tie Fighter can shoot down an X-Wing so a Tie Fighter, but the Falcon can destroy numerous TIEs so the Falcon is my fav." When he was done with his little out burst, I propley bitch slapped him upside the head.

Does the Sun Crusher count as a fighter? Probably a heavy bomber.
(Hehehehehe)
Now if only you could rig a World Devastator to mass produce those...
And a Quantum microarmor (or whatever) plating on that, too...

I'd pick the A-Wing over the TIE/I, it has superior acceleration as well as a much greater firing arc (especially in the various mods that gave it almost complete freedom of movement).

Favorite to fly in TIE Fighter and the other games? The Missile Boat.
Favorite Star Fighter from the movies? X-Wing.
Favorite book-only ship? XJ X-Wing.
Top honors go to the TIE Defender, Chiss Clawcraft, and the TIE Phantom.

well phongn ...
6 guns rather then 2, and who knows, the T/I may have guns that fire off-axis (although the evidence for that in ROTJ is not too conclusive).
If it has, the the disparity in acceleration would not be enough for me to go for the A-W.

What about the 12 gun Tie Interceptor?

Where do you get 12 from?
ROTJ conclusively shows a minimum of 6 guns, and the T/I model has 10 identical features of which 6 are in the same place as the 6 known (Canon) guns, so it may very well have 10, but where would these other 2 guns be hidden?

i saw here mentioned that there was a 12 gunner. Try doing a forum search.

found nothing on "12" + any one of "Interceptor" "interceptor" "T/I" "T/Int" "T/int" "gun" "cannon" "tie" "TIE" "squint", so it doesn't seem likely that I will find it any time soon
I must be doing this wrong anyway: my post above includes both "12" & "T/I"
*EDIT* learned to use AND, is there a () or [] or {} option in this?
haven't found any references back to 10th of this month (but lots of mishits).
