Dr. Trainwreck wrote:Romani have an actual presence and history in Europe, were targets for the Holocaust, and still face massive discrimination in Eastern Europe. I've literally seen people holding protests because a Roma camp would be built outside their city and describing them as an infestation. The word gupsy is also used as a slur against anybody, Roma or not. Given the attitude towards Roma, I think you could compare it to 'nigger': everyone in the US once used Tarantino's favorite word without thinking how it could be racist.
So, Travis Beacham was more than a little insensate with the whole issue. Then again he's not European and he apparently apologized, so it evens out.
Travis was unaware it was a racist term and to be frank who can blame him, it isn't seen as that highly offensive as 'negro' or 'faggot' by word alone and education plays a part of that because of the emphasis that the N word was the main racial thing to be aware of. Some countries don't regard 'negro' as racist such as Uruguay, just as Gypsy isn't offensive in every region of the world, it's not seen as racist in the UK by itself, and having programmes like 'my big fat gypsy wedding' make it the norm term, but saying pikey is very offensive, particular to irish travellers.
But you know what's offensive, automatically judging and labelling someone that their not like this

It would have come close to redeeming the fucking Nazi who thought 'Gupsy Danger' was a good name for the robot.
Pacfic rim isn't 'drag me to hell' that literally has a gypsy stereotype come in and curse etc. The name came from another source altogether and was used to name a giant robot. And yet this warrants Travis bring branded a Nazi how? You should bother doing research as to why the robot was named 'gypsy danger' and not assume because the scriptwriter was a racist.
On subject of the film, it looks very promising and should had been the version the 98 tried to go for, I have seen Gareth Edwards 'Monsters' and recommend it to anyone to rent, but as long as it has no first camera-shaking Cloverfield, it had excellent marketing but not really that good a film.
