damn, how did that happen?
I surreptitiously loosen my crossbow and sword, readying them for action and carefully studying the situation for possible trouble.

Torg Olafson, you have arrived in Inverness, and at a very interesting time. The whole place seems to be on edge, and something is not right.

Ian motions more vigorously this time and hisses, "Come on! I'm not trying to mug you, this is a matter best not discussed in public."

I take out my rapier and a flask of alchemists fire, and go to the door.I set my viper on the floor with orders to attack anyone that makes a threatening move toward me. And cast Mage armor . I make a spot check through the door 18+5=23 and if it is in fact an elderly man, I open the door, rapier drawn and standing to the side behind the door frame. If it isnt an old man, I keep that door closed

Oh and I set my viper on the floor with orders to attack anyone that makes a threatening move toward me.
You move toward the door but are stopped short by a lance of pure darkness that impales the door and anything that had been on either side. A choked gurgle announces that whoever was outside happened to be skewered on the spike as well. It slowly withdraws and is then accompanied by the thud of a body hitting the ground.

In pursuit of the lizardman, he catches sight of a 'Thug' leading a rogueish female through the crowd and decides to follow.

As you walk by an alleyway you hear some commotion down it and around the corner. Whatever it is that's going on down there is giving you a very bad feeling.

I back AWAY from the door, and stand in the middle of the room. I then allow my viper to take a look under the door and tell me what he sees...(this does not mean making himself visible... he is small, he should be able to see under the door...)

Your viper reports a robed figure leaving the way it came, and what was presumeably an old man is now a rapidly rotting corpse.
---
Torg, you see a cloaked man leaving the alley. He walks by you, seemingly ingoring your noticeable shiver as he - or it - passes.

I take a close look at the rapidly-evaporating lance, and after a moment pick up a piece of straw from the bed and drop it on the lance.
The straw turns to dust and falls to the floor.
"I am not liking this," I quietly mutter to myself in Elvish.

I quickly open the door, and pull the body in, and shut the door behind. Locking it again as I close it.(assuming I can lock it after It is opened, if not, then I sit still and call the viper back)
If the above conditions are met, I seach the body as for some clue of the evil that attacked him

The small man spots you and says, "Eh? I was told the ko- er, Ryu, right? Come with us. There are important matters we must discuss... elsewhere..."

You trail him through a winding series of alleys until you both reach a dead end. He turns slowly around.
A rasping whisper escapes his hood, "Good. I have use for you. Please, remain still, it will be considerably less painful."
You black out.

"Wait a moment," I say, reaching down to my belt pouch and pulling out a set of thieves' tools. "I'll pick the lock. Alastar, can you keep an eye out for anyone outside?"
