You know, when I made my first reply I wasn't making any effort to be mean, I was taking the time to show why there's no point in discussing what you proposed, because for it to happen it really would be fiction and the options you sought would be utterly meaningless. You then produced to object to this, and that greatly annoys the fuck out of me.

His "expert" opinion was that it was an unworkable scenario. He wasn't being an asshole, because when we're dealing with historical scenarios (as opposed to sci-fi or fantasy scenarios) we have concrete and nearly complete data on the whole subject, such that we can say definitively that such-and-such idea is no good. We're not combining disparate sci-fi universes, we're introducing different ideas into a fully established and known universe--our own history.

To clarify the reason for the pissed-off response to your question, things like this crop up all the time in alternate history discussions. People say "what if Poland conquered Russia during the Time of Troubles?" or "what if Prinz Eugen went all the way to Istanbul?". At a certain point in posing these what-ifs, it transcend plausibility and becomes pure fantasy, in which case there's no legitimate answer, except for "It couldn't and wouldn't happen." When you came back and demanded an answer anyway, it was just a little annoying. Don't take it personally.
