"well once the storm lets up, we should have little trouble protecting ourselves from the cold with spells"

Ok. The storm lasts through the night, when you wake up in the morning, you find that the floor of the cart is 4 inches below the snow level so some has come in.

How are the horses? and how are we?

None of you have stuck your head out yet, so you don't know.

Everyone is fine, except for Spark and Ember (but you allready know about that.)

Right, I look out.

"Has anyone got a long stick or anything else like that, just so we know where the cart is when we go out? The worse thing that could happen to us, short of the mages or the weird old man coming back again would be to be walking around with no shelter."

Johan lifts his hat off his face and looks toward the exit. "I might have something in my packs. I need to see how Shadowfoot is doing, anyway." Then he crawls outside.

(OOC: just decided to name my horse)

Ok, you crawl up the small snow pile and look out.

The storm has passed, and you can see your near the top of a VERY tall mountain. There is nothing around, but you think you see a building near the top.

As for the horses, they are under a few feet of snow, their alive....barely.

I quickly start brushing the snow away from their heads, so they can at least get some air. Then I go back to the cart and ask if anyone has a shovel.

(What about the cart's wheels? Are they completely broken, as in unrepairable?)

The front axle is snapped in half and the wheels are totaled.

When I can see the people in the cart again, I address Robgea. "You, I forgot your name... Do you mind if we use the wood from this cart's wheels to start a fire? The horses nearly got frozen to death, we have to get them warmed up."

"My Pony!" Grozny squeals as he runs over to where the tip of the ponies ears are sticking out of the ground. He digs down to th pony's legs, and throws his sleeping roll over it. "We need to get them some place warm quickly. If that is a building up on the moutain there, it may be our best best."

I walk over to my sturd, and huge, war horse, and shovel the snow away from it.
"We must make a fire, quickly. The horses won't survive in that frozen hell for long..."

"Use the axels for the fire, if we try hard enough we could try to make the wood from the wheels into skis/skates for the cart, then if we tether the horses together we could get somewhere warmer, quicker. At night we'll have to see if we can find ourselves via the stars. Keenan, see if you can get your familiar to light a fire for us, I'll try and get Quoth to go see if there's anything else on this mountain."

And thus I send Quoth, if it's not discomforting/cold for him, up into the air to see if he can see anything, and guess how high up we are.

"Will do," and burp a little flame up to light the wood (*if that doesn't use up my breath weapon slot for that day... if so, I just use my flint stone...)

by lazerus
Ok......It's freezing cold, and there is snow everywhere, a flint isn't going to light paper, much less wood.

Well, he is using his breath weapon, so I suppose that works... if not... I cast burning hands to start fire.

Posted: 2004-02-26 06:38pm
by Dahak
(Course I onlyd use it if it isn't counting as a full use. I don't want to throw a breath weapon use away...)

(right, so he's not using it)

Then I help everyone get through the snow, make a clering, get the wood set up, and then cast burning hands on it. I think that 5d4 fire da,age should be enough to dry out the wood and catch it on fire.

Ok, you all clear away a lot of snow, and within half-an-hour you have all the horses standing by a sickly fire.

--

Just as you finish, Quoth comes back to report that there is only 1 visible building on the mountain (the one you saw). It appears to be some kind of huge wooden lodge.

"Well, we better look what that lodge is. Anything's better than staying outside..."

While my gloves dry off at least partially in front of the fire, I turn to the others. "Well, normally I might not do anything like this... but seeing as we're not really getting anywhere sitting on a snow-covered mountainside like this, I'd like to scout out the lodge before we all risk ourselves on it. I have climbing gear, so rough terrain isn't a problem for me. I'm also fairly light, so starting avalanches shouldn't be too much of a problem." I sit down, pull off my backpack, and start running through its contents.

I wrap my cloak around myself, pulling the hood up tight, and lean back into the snow. "But you stand out, moreso when flying. How do we know that whoever it is up there is going to welcome a group of strangers who got dropped out of the middle of nowhere onto his mountainside?"

(OOC: Just how far up the mountain is the lodge, anyway? I know it's visual range, but... hell, I'm in visual range of the transmitter sites on the mountain above me, but they're 3000 feet higher. As in a day's march, a kilometer of elevation...?)
