I've also noticed heavy multitasking loads don't slow down other tasks as badly under Linux (at least 2.6), since I can compile and delete a large source tree and uncompress another while browsing with Firebird on a PII-450 without crashing or slowdown. Then again, this is subjective, since most of my experience with Windows is on Win9x on a PII-266. However, I've noticed 1.4GHz PIVs at school (Computer Science gets the best computers) running XP crash quite often too, especially considering I spend less time on them.
