Our resident mutant foriegner the diamond smuggler (he is australian) conferms that it is infact a real dish called a pie floater. "And if you want it state side make it your self" his words not mine. He however recomends another Australian dish over this, the noble Lamington.
All I want is a kind word, a warm bed, and unlimited power.

You *really* can't buy meat pies in the US? Huh?? Do students exist solely on pot noodles? Tell me you have pot noodles!! It boggles the MIND! What do they sell at crappy corner stores?? Like, just sausage rolls and shit? America is one WIERD place :)
If meat pies contain beef, vegetables, and beef gravy, then that's called a Beef Pot Pie here.
As opposed to the more common Chicken or Turkey Pot Pie. All three varieties are better known as coming from frozen food manufacturers more than anything mom would make. And you never see them in restaurants.

"Pot noodles"? You have me there. Anything like Ramen?

Our crappy corner stores have microwave burritos, hot dogs, Beef Jerky and Slim Jims.

Instant noodles, come in either a little plastic pot or a small bag, boil them for two minutes and you've got noodles. As for meat pies, they're a corner store food, along with sausage rolls. They came in many different varieties, mince, mince and cheese, steak, steak and cheese, steak and mushroom, steak and kidney (that one's not my personal favorite)

Don't students eat maccaroni and cheese down south? Better known as 'KD' (Kraft Dinner, it's a brand name) up in the frozen north.

Oh, absoluty (tho I can't stadn the stuff meself.) MREs, reheated pizza/chinese wood, loaves of bread, and of course the ubiquitous Ramen are all popular.
