year I stopped counting when I went up to 20/800....

-6 in both. Fortunately, they've stopped getting worse.

20/17 and 20/15, pretty good considering my family's (very poor) history. I am unfortunately losing my hearing. Contruction work and flying are probably the causes.

Piss-poor enough to where the DMV is considering putting my face on a poster with BANNED written on the top in large letters. It's off the chart in the left eye, and flutters from one to two-hundred in the right. Immacular Degeneration (Wet) in both doesn't help things, though I do have the notoriety of being one of the youngest cases in New York State, right alongside the Blueberry Muffin Syndrome I had at birth that supposedly got me a spot in the NEMJ.

I might as well just get a patch and follow Lord Raptor's advice.

Last time I checked it was around -4.50 for both eyes and a nice case of astigmatism to go with it. I am pretty much fucked without glasses if I leave my home.

Ugh... bad, though I can't find my paperwork (with my glasses on I can see my hand clearly if it is no more than three inches from my face, if that means anything). I expect to be legally blind by my mid-fortes (I'm 23 now), as my eyes continually get worse.

I agree with Durandal - ya'll are a bunch of crybabies. Thought I was going to be the worst case here but he's got me (slightly) beat:

Left: -8.75
Right: -8.5

I've also got cylinder correction for the astignatism. Can't see the big "E" on the eye chart? I can't even see the whole chart.

Yeah, corrective eye surgery sounds interesting but currently the maximum correction they do it 8 diopters, which at best would still leave me at -.75 and -.5 - and that's assuming my corneas are thick enough to take that much correction. If they aren't, they wouldn't be able to do even that much. On top of that, I'm also at high risk for a number of side effects from that surgery so it just didn't seem worth it to me - glasses are a pain the ass but at my vision can be corrected to a crisp 20/20 with them. I'll leave well enough alone - another 20 years and vision correction technology will be even better.

On the flip side - my hearing seems to be better than average, especially for most 40 year olds I know. Not perfect there, either - I know I've lost some from my right ear. I am getting a little tired of arguing about appropriate TV volumes with my Other Half, though.

20/20 eyesight, last time I had an eye exam. The masturbation still hasn't done anything...

You know what they say about if you lose one sense, the others will compensate? I'm pretty sure that any compensation in better hearing that I get as a result of having bad eyesight are negated by the hearing loss I'm getting by being around a lot of lunatics with big brass instruments and no volume control all the time.

Both my eyes are 20/200 without my contacts.

Moderately near-sighted in my left eye. Can function without my glasses with relative ease, though everything is mildly fuzzy but still legable. Feels rather uncomfortable, as I can actually feel my eyes individually attempting to focus.

Right: -10
Left: -9

I think that's right. All I know is I needed a waiver to get in the military.

Naw.... in 20/xxx terms I'm a lot worse than that... actually past a certain point the whole 20/xxx thing gets to be a bit meaningless, but between the myopia and the astingnatism my uncorrected vision is in the neighborhood of something like 20/3500. Without glasses I can barely read large print books.

That's why we're talking in diopters rather the "20/20" scale.

And there are folks here worse than me.

And yes, I DO carry spare pairs of eyeglasses with me in the car and the airplane. Even when I ride my bicycle for that matter.

20/25, which I find is acceptable. It has, however, noticably declined of late. I should do something about it but... I haven't.

I used to have eyesight like Alyeska's before I was 15, then the genetics took over. Beginnings of lazy-eye in the left eye, which means, like my mom, I will ultimately go blilnd in that eye. I also have astigmatism in both. I don't remember my exact numbers, but it's bad enough I need glasses, can't see too great past 30 feet, but not so bad that I actually wear my glasses all the time. My glasses are kinda cool though, because of my dayblindness, I have what almost amounts to green-blue dark sunglasses. (Look up "Irlen Syndrome" btw.)

As long as my eyes don't do the stuff my mom's do, I can put up with the left eye sometimes going crossed when I'm tired, and the somewhat bad vision. I'll get contacts some day I think.

My mom's vision started going when she was 15. I'm 25 and still have excelent vision. I guess I inherited my dads vision. He didn't start wearing glasses till he was in his 40s, and thats just for things up close. He long distance vision is just as good as mine. We regularly spot things in the sky or at a distance that everyone else completely misses.

I can't imagine living life without vision as good as I have.

BTW, when I was 10 my vision was 20-10 in both eyes. So things haven't changed much.

No idea. Last time I had an eye test was when I was a kid (like 14 or more years ago). They were perfectly fine then and AFAIK still are. I mean, I've never had problems with them or with seeing things at a distance so I guess I must be ok.

My updated prescription is around -5.6. The doctor decided not to go to -6 otherwise I'd need bifocals to read within a year. I've a habit when I'm not driving or going out to wear eyeglasses from the prescription previous to my present one and it seems to have slowed somewhat the further weakening of my eyesight.

If necessary, I can get around without glasses —everything's a bit blurry but I can make out objects and my surroundings well enough; I can still distinguish seperate objects at distance. I could not read signs nor see well enough to drive. But it's good to know that even after 25 years I'm not totally dependent on glasses as yet.

I'll rape the opportunity and ask a question to people who had laser eye surgery:

Im thinking about having this kind of surgery, because I have about -8 in both my eyes (ha! probably the worse vision in this thread so far, beat me;)

Now, I heard that there are slight chances of surgery SNAFU, although I never really consulted a doctor or a clinic that specializes in those things. And how did the surgery look for you? Did you had the divine 5 seconds of "Will it work or will I be blind for the rest of my life" kind of situation?

but I don't wear corrective lenses. It sounds like there are a lot of high prescriptions on the board. For those of you with Rx of -6 and -9 and the like, is that total power or just sphere?

The 20/x system isn't very informative beyond giving a baseline from which to determine a prescription.
