Lord Revan: One piece of spyware, though you also have three applications that are eating up a lot of resources on startup. I'll list these and what they do below.
KILL. wrote:O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe
O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe
(PowerReg Scheduler is a piece of spyware installed with some other software (often with versions of Partition Magic). It's not too malicious compared to say, CWS, and simply will nag you to register your software. Of course, it doesn't uninstall itself after that's been done, and apparently continues to send user info surreptitiously. I'd kill it just to be on the safe side.)
Optional to kill wrote:O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
(Real Scheduler, which doesn't do anything except download more Real Player components. I can't think of any reason to run this.)
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [LDM] C:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger\8876480\Program\BackWeb-8876480.exe
(BackWeb, a program which checks several times each day for updates to Logitech drivers. Mostly harmless, but if you'd rather that it not use your connection, you can disable this.)
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE
(Office Startup, which preloads parts of Office into memory. The speed boost you get in starting Word or Excel is offset by the extra time spent waiting during startup. Again, completely optional to disable.)

Mitth`raw`nuruodo: This sort of entry is exactly why I had requested that the automated tools be used first. It would almost be shorter to list what not to kill! Hope your friend develops better browsing habits in the future.

These processes MUST be terminated before you proceed with any further action. If not killed first, they'll just respawn what you delete.

C:\Program Files\Web_Rebates\WebRebates0.exe
C:\Program Files\Common Files\GMT\GMT.exe

Now comes the fun part. All of these can be killed with extreme prejudice.

Fin D'ah Gub: No spyware on your system, though you have a few bits of cruft. You can remove or keep these as needed. You might consider replacing Real Player and Quicktime with Real Alternative and Quicktime Alternative, which lack startup stubs and are generally a bit slimmer in memory footprint.

O4 - Global Startup: Logitech Desktop Messenger.lnk = C:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger\8876480\Program\LDMConf.exe
(Logitech Desktop Messenger. Checks for driver and software upgrades, but is pretty useless at the task. You can easily kill this.)

The Aliens: Please update your copy of HijackThis! to the latest version and rescan. You still have some spyware loaded, but might not be able to catch it all with your copy as is. For now, here's the usual breakdown into definite spyware and cruft, based off of your 1.97 log.

Oh, and I don't have a ton of experience cleaning through spyware. How do I delete the stuff it picks out?

Praxis: Please get your friend to update his copy of HJT!. As for how to terminate entries, check the box next to everything you want to kill in HJT! then click "Fix checked." Easy as that. For terminating programs before running HJT!, CTRL-ALT-DEL, then click on the process you want to stop under the "Processes" tab and hit "End Process" (assuming a Windows 2k/XP-based system).

Like Mitth`raw`nuruodo's entry, you'll have to terminate some processes before killing the spyware.

First off, you're running an old version. The current version is 1.98.2.

And second, take out these while you're at it:

Asst. Asst. Lt. Cmdr. Smi: Your box is 0wned. You have a trojan on this system, as well as several pieces of spyware. Your copy of HJT! is outdated, as well. Please rescan with 1.98.2 and update your post with the new log after cleaning the following out, as the presence of the trojan complicates things. A full antivirus scan with up-to-date definitions would help, as well.

Terminate these processes before proceeding further:
Prepurge checklist wrote:C:\Program Files\Windows AdControl\WinAdCtl.exe
C:\Program Files\Windows AdControl\WinAdAlt.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\erfi009p.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\uaucplw.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\pnetd.exe
The two AdControl spyware bits will try to alternately restore each other as well as possibly crashing your system when you try and kill them, so it may take several tries before you can shut both down.

After you've terminated those processes, kill the following entries:

Asst. Asst. Lt. Cmdr. Smi: Three more pieces. Get rid of these and you should be clean.

Terminate these processes first:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\tipxmibr.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\lga.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\inhlp32w.exe
Kill these:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [tipxmibr] C:\WINDOWS\System32\tipxmibr.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [lga] C:\WINDOWS\System32\lga.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [inhlp32w] C:\WINDOWS\System32\inhlp32w.exe

The "inhlp32w" file isn't showing up in my HijackThis Log, but I didn't manually get rid of it like the other two. Should I worry about it?

The log you posted had that entry in it; if it isn't showing up on subsequent scans, I'm not sure what to think. It might be renaming itself (as some spyware does), or it might have been linked to one of the other two and got killed along with them. There's very little information on inhlp32w.exe, so I can't really tell you its behavior or level of maliciousness. It doesn't appear to be a system file, and isn't part of any major legit software, so I wouldn't trust its continued presence.

If your new log doesn't have any new entries compared to the last one you posted (in other words, the only changes are the three missing entries), you should be clean. If it's had other changes (new entries that didn't appear on the previous scan), update and repost the log one more time.

No spyware, just some generally annoying legitimate entries. MySpace seems to be harmless but if you don't use Myspace, then delete it.
Damaramu wrote:C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\CDAC11BA.EXE -- MacroVision SafeCast. Not necessary except for playing games, generally just a pain in the butt.
