That's actually a great idea, although it'd be a huge game to do properly.
But a damn fantastic idea...

I say merge the game Victoria with TW. I'd pay money to play that.

Wouldn't mind seeing Shogun redone with all the new features. A lot of my "want" games are like that - remakes of older games with all singing all dancing effects, while keeping the old gameplay.

You know that that'll never be. Total War doesn't have ship-to-ship combat.
Have a very nice day.

oooh, Shaka total war...
or send your fast moving impi to crush those highly innaccurate brown bess wielders...
another thought.
the very beginning of the gunpowder age, had very slow reloading times, battles were still carried by the pike and the sword.

It's called Homeworld.

That's pretty much what Shogun is. There are some early muskets and such, but they're more or less irrelevant, and the real battles are fought with archers, cavalry, and infantry.

Well they could also do Colonies Total War, it was the last harrah for melee on a grand scale. You could have the spainards, the brits, the dutch and the french.
make trades/enlist the indians as your allies, storm colonial towns, and gunpowder is effective in forts like bowyers are in TW games, but the pike still exists.
also wooden ships in real time, with great melees sounds like pirates+total war combo pack...

It would be kind of cool to command a ship in ship-to-ship combat, but I don't know how the engine would work for that. It woud be kind of crappy if you only got to issue orders like "Prepare for Boarders," and then had all of your marines rush to the side with pikes and muskets.

well on the sides of the ships you could use options like the flame shot, to creat hellbores (fireboats), chain shot (reduces speed), solid shot (default), grape shot (reduces speed and crew), the ship to ship engines would take into account how much crew the opposing vessel has, and how likely they are to break and whenever you get withing a certain range they will fling grapples and attempt to board you.

That still seems like a waste of the engine and system, though. No, I'm afraid that could be some other game. It would be better, IMNSHO, if they stuck with infantry combat. Maybe one of the lesser-known wars, or something? It could be cool to play in the Napoleonic era, even if there was little actual melee combat in that. It could also be cool to play in the wars of colonization.

It's called Homeworld.
I'm curious, how does one equate Homeworld to the Age of Sail?
My suggestion is more in line to your rebuttal, so I will respond: Homeworld can't quite get the same scale as Rome can. I want that scale, and I don't care how many I have to kill to get it!

Hmmm... for some reason I thought they were referring to Indian Indians (if you follow me). Meh.

LucasArts uses the RTW engine to make Total War: Jedi VS Sith. It is about the extinction of the Sith thousands of years prior to the PT. Massive amounts of Jedi and Sith fight in saber combat to the death, using a variety of Force powers. Jedi and Sith gain experience if they survive and eventually become Jedi Masters and Sith Lords.

I want Medieval War II. I want an animated strategy board. I want the option of attacking/defending on the outskirts of my provinces.
I also want the ability to design my own catles. Give me tech upgrades in wall slabs. Let me use slabs of wall to make my castle with individual structures inside.

Anything with sensibly positioned archer towers does me. A whole castle designer would be kinda nice... like the ability to build two buildings at once.
I don't think earlier stuff than Rome - like Greece, Mesopotamia, etc - would be any good, because their units and tactics evolve too slowly and end up kinda boring, and most of the world is full or Scary Barbarians.
ROT3K isn't meant to be historically accurate; the laughable 'accuracy' of Rome is far more amusing since it's pretty obvious they were drunk throughout the reseach phase.
As much as I think a massive Spain to Japan map would be fun, the TW games suffer from a deeply crap late game, and I'd HATE to have to manage a 200-odd province empire. CA just haven't solved the scale problem, and the game quickly stops being fun after you have 30-40 provinces, know you're going to win, always autoresolve, etc.

My favorite history goof with Total War is in Medieval, where in the Early Middle Ages the Normans have Sicily but not Southern Italy.
Huugggh?
Still, the games are supposed to aim more for the "feel" of real history than actual authenticity. You want accuracy, go for Paradox.
